Roger Sorenson Obituary

Roger Lee Sorenson

1943 - 2025

South Jordan, UT - Roger Lee Sorenson, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend returned to his Heavenly Father and his sweetheart Judy on March 28, 2025 at the age of 81–a short 33 days after his beloved wife, Judy. A man of faith, love, diligence and compassion. All those who know him know that he loves them through the actions and love that he constantly shared with everyone. He lived well and spread the love of his Savior Jesus Christ in his every interaction.

Born on October 23, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ernest and Irene Sorenson, Roger was an instant and constant blessing to his family. His life is a legacy of faith, music, and devoted service. He was happiest when building memories with his family, watching a favorite musical, enjoying the great outdoors (looking for deer), watching BYU play, or just spending time together laughing and telling the daddest of dad jokes.

Roger met Judy Sorenson when they were both still in school. Judy was the daughter of Roger's band instructor. The first day he met her he was struck and after asking who she was, he boldly announced, "I'm going to marry her someday". This began a life-long love affair. Roger and Judy were sealed for eternity on November 27, 1963 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together their focus and happiness was always centered on their family. They have built a legacy of love and faith with their eight children with their spouses (who he was always sure to call daughters and son), forty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Roger adored his family and taught them through loving counsel and by humble example. The goodness of his life can be seen in the lives and hearts of his posterity.

Roger was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and constantly worked to share his testimony and love of the Savior with others. He served in a variety of callings, including serving twice as bishop, and always gave his all to help others feel the love of the Savior. A highlight of his service was his time serving with his beloved Judy as missionaries at the church historical sites and temple in St. George, Utah.

Whether fishing, hunting, looking for deer and moose at dusk or drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream on cold mornings (especially at the cabin), Roger loved spending time in the great outdoors with his family and friends. He loved playing his trombone in the jazz band and performing alongside his children (best Potiphar ever). He was always the proudest cheerleader for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports, plays and other achievements. His greatest joy was in seeing those he loved happy.

Roger is survived by his children Todd (Holly), Terry (Wendy), Tim (Stacy), Gary (Hannah), Brad (Rachel), Trisha (Dave), and Justin (Jo); forty grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren; all of whom will forever miss his sense of humor and the warm love, care and light that he constantly shared everywhere he went. He is preceded in death by his eternal sweetheart Judy; his parents Ernest and Irene, his brother Richard (Phyllis) and sister Ruth (Jim), his niece Patti, and his baby son Scotty. We rejoice in our faith that Roger is reunited with his loved ones and that he will continue to be doing all he can to bless us all from his heavenly home.

In his personal history, Roger wrote, "Some men and women write their life history for the world to see. When I wrote mine, it was for only my family to see, with the hopes that they may see what influenced me and made me the person that I am". Everyone who knew Roger was touched by the love and compassion that infused his every interaction with everyone he knew and loved. Roger never missed an opportunity to love, teach, uplift, encourage, and strengthen others. His only ambitions were to help others be the best they could, to create memorable experiences that strengthen bonds with his family and friends, and help others draw closer to his Savior Jesus Christ.

The family would like to share their heartfelt gratitude to Roger's dear friend, Don Worthington, and the caregivers at the IMC Hospital and Ovation Hospice for their love, care and support at this important time.

A funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meeting house located at 2447 W 11400 S, South Jordan, UT 84095 on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11 am. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 8:00-10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Roger's memory by sharing your favorite dad joke or reaching out to lift a loved one-just as he always did.

Roger was my band teacher at Bingham High. Although only for a short time, his example of dedication and persistence greatly influenced my music career. He will be missed.

Growing up in the same neighborhood with Roger created many fun memories. We ran around together as a gang ; Jim Moyle, Fred Santastevens, Ray Johnson, and myself.
We played dirt field baseball, basketball, hide and seek at night, hiked the mountains, tracked down a mountain lion, and grew up going to church down on Magna Main Street.

Mr. Sorenson was my band teacher at Brockbank Jr. He also collaborated with the other Roger at Cyprus High. I used to think of them as the Woodwind and the Brass, I guess you know who was in charge. Much respect for your father, may he rest in peace.

You described your dad perfectly. He and your mom were the sweetest always with smiles on their faces. I love them and now they are together again. You were all raised by goodly parents and that is a treasure. Colleen Van Wagoner.
