Romney Stewart Obituary

1947 ~ 2015
Our husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away peacefully at his home Friday, November 13, 2015.
Romney was a man of unwavering faith and character and uncompromising principles. He was a fun-loving, dedicated, and supportive husband and father. He possessed many outstanding qualities and someone that carried a discernable light. He was born in Washington D.C. to George R. and Iva Mildred Stewart on February 15, 1947. He and his older brother spent their childhood in Arlington, VA while his father worked for the US Congress. The Stewart family then moved to Downey, CA where Romney graduated from Downey High School, lettering in football and participating in student government.
Romney attended Cal State University at Long Beach, then left after his sophomore year to serve a church mission in Scotland. Upon returning to school, he served as Regional LDSSA President and joined the Army National Reserve where he served for six years. After graduating with his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Cal State, he then attended graduate school at Brigham Young University where he met his eternal sweetheart, Mayrene Grange, whom he married in the Salt Lake Temple. Romney graduated from BYU with a Master's degree in Public Administration.
Romney worked in California in various management positions for the City of Long Beach, for five years; followed by nearly 29 years working in a number of divisional management positions for Salt Lake County, including Dir. of Solid Waste Management. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a substitute teacher for the Granite School District.
"Papa Bear" was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending his summers at the family "ranch" in Woodland, Utah; where he created fond family memories of fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, playing horseshoes, and spending time with extended family. Romney was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in various leadership capacities in both family and singles wards, including Bishop of the Mt. Olympus 5th Ward. He also enjoyed his time as a volunteer working in the Draper Temple.
Romney was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Charles, (Jamie), two grandchildren Macy & Isaac, and his in-laws Russell D. and Helen F. Grange. He is survived by his wife Mayrene and their four children; Romney M. Stewart II (Kristin), Rachele S. Morgan (Reggie), Cameron G. Stewart (Amy), Charlene Barber (Matt) and niece Taylor Stewart.
A viewing will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens on Friday, Nov. 20 from 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Newcastle Ward at 2180 East Meadowlark Way (9020 So) in Sandy, UT with a viewing prior to the service from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Internment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 So) in Sandy, Utah. Online condolences: www.larkincares.com

I was so very sorry to hear of Romney's passing. It's been nearly 20 years since I worked with him in Salt Lake County, but I often thought of him with great fondness. Romney was one of the best bosses I ever had during my career. He was the perfect combination of kindness with encouragement to reach father and try harder. He was a very fine man and I'm sure he will be greatly missed. I hope that in time, your memories will bring you great comfort. Warmest wishes and blessings to all who loved him.

Mayrene,

I apologize to you and your family for my tardiness in expressing my appreciation and admiration that I hold for Romney. I just learned of his passing and wanted to be sure to share my thoughts. During the time I served as Public Works Director for Salt Lake County, Romney was the Deputy Director. I will never forget the courtesy and support he extended to me despite the fact that he was a seasoned veteran and I was brand new the department. He went out of his way to share with me his vast knowledge and I doubt there was any other person in the state more knowledge about the complexities and challenges in operating a land fill in an urban county. He exhibited the same courtesy to all of his colleagues and took great care to be responsive the concerns expressed by the public. I knpw that his passing is very difficult for you and your family. However, there is comfort to be found in remembering his strong testimony of the Savior and he is now sharing his talents in another realm. May God bless each of you with comfort.

Saturday was a multifuneral day, so a message must suffice. We of the Mt. Olympus Stake were so fortunate to have had the Stewart's with us. You were pillars of spirituality, stability, friendship, and good cheer. We admire Romney so much for his part in keeping the ward, neighborhood, stake, and county afloat. From all appearances, he had discovered the secret to happiness. It must have been Mayrene. What a blessing to the Stewart Ship to have been Romney's stewardship. We were a bit surprised to see him on this page just yet, but assume it's because heaven needs a manager. Condolences to you all.

Dear Mayrene,

I must share a memory of you and Romney I treasure. When Reggie and Chele came back from their honeymoon the four of us went to their apartment to watch them open wedding gifts. As I remember we were sitting on the floor. You and Romney and Randy and I started talking and laughing so much that the kids finally had to ask us to pay some attention to them!

We visited Romney the day before we left on our mission. We are so glad we were able to spend some time with him. We are praying for your and your sweet family.

So sorry to hear about the passing of my uncle Romney. Although decades have gone by, I often reflect on the wonderful times spent with him and Grandpa Stewart at the ranch. My thoughts and prayers are with the rest of the family at this time.

I have the great privilege to call Romney my Father-In-Law. For the last 18 years I have been a part of the family and always felt welcome and loved. Both Romney and Mayrene have treated me like their own son. I am a better man to have known Romney and spent time with him in so many situations. I will miss you at the ranch and in my home. I will miss you always complementing my children, telling them how beautiful they are. You will be missed. Please give Macy and Isaac a big hug and kiss form their daddy.

Dear Mayrene and family, We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved husband and father. The memory that stands out to me was when you (Mayrene) and I were both living south of campus at BYU. I remember you had just gotten your new engagement ring and how excited you were about that and about the prospect of marrying this wonderful man. You were right. He was a one of a kind gem. -- Anita Shiner Tromp
