Ronald Haun Obituary

Ronald Earl Haun

1943 ~ 2025

St. George, UT-Ronald Haun, 82, passed away in his home in Saint George following a year-long battle with brain cancer. Ron was born on April 14, 1943, to Earl and Ruth Haun in Murray, Utah. On Valentine's Day of 1969 he married Beverly North Haun in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Growing up in Murray, Ron discovered a passion and talent for athletics earning him the nickname Rifle Arm Ronnie as Murray High School's quarterback. Following his graduation, he served in the Army Reserves before pursuing higher education at Dixie State College (now Utah Tech University) and Weber State College, and eventually Brigham Young University where he earned his master's and served as Graduate Assistant Football Coach. His professional career began coaching tennis, basketball and football at Skyline High School in Salt Lake City before returning to his roots to serve as the Head Football coach of Murray High School, leading them to two state championship titles. His career eventually evolved from high school to collegiate athletics where he coached at Weber State as the Offensive Coordinator (2005) and as Dixie State College's Head Coach (2006 – 2009). Most notably, he served as the Head Coach of the Ricks College football team from 1982 until the school ended inter-collegiate athletics in 2001. In his 19 years at Ricks' helm, he stacked up an impressive 178–40–2 record,10 bowl game wins and 8 conference championships as well as several National Academic Championships. He received multiple Coach of the Year awards, was recognized as the Most Winningest Active NJCAA Coach, and was inducted in the NJCAA Football Hall of Fame (2002) and the Utah Sports Hall of Fame (2018).

Coach was not just about football. When he was not pacing the sidelines or breaking down game film, Coach enjoyed the outdoors, especially rowing and fishing the rivers of southeast Idaho --- some outings resulting in legendary adventures. Coach had a deep love for his family, his faith, his coaches and his players.

Ronald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly Haun; and their children: Luke Haun and Lisa Haun (daughter-in-law) and granddaughter, Nasyah Haun of Pheonix, Arizona, Trent Haun of Salt Lake City, Utah and Rebecca Haun Savidis and Justin Savidis (son-in-law) of Willow, Alaska; his brother H.L. "Pete" Haun and Judy Haun (sister-in-law) of Draper, Utah; and his sister Clella Smith of Midvale, Utah.

The family wishes to thank donors of the GoFundMe campaign established to offset medical costs as well as the coaches, players and friends who called and visited since Coach Haun's diagnosis up to and following his passing.

Ron was my Tennis Coach for three years at Skyline High. When he started in 1969, he only knew the basics of the game. By my Senior year, he knew the strengths of our team and was able to lead us to an All State 2nd Place only behind a very powerful Olympus team. More importantly, he was a wonderful coach and friend. Thanks coach

In the late summer of 1989 I showed up a couple days later than most in Rexburg to attend Ricks College football camp after working in Stockton California as a laborer in construction. The equipment that was issued to me was way too big and outdated, due to it being all that was left. After two-a-days were over and after an afternoon practice Coach Haun pulled me aside put his arm around me and said "you can play here". He then personally took me around the equipment room and handed me all new pads, pants and gear. He had a way of getting the very best effort out of me. I will never forget his encouragement and his drive for excellence! Love and prayers to his wife and family.

Coach Haun touched so many lives of the young men that he coached and I was lucky enough to be one of them. He brought me to Rick's College, first as a Player in 1983 and then he gave me the opportunity to Coach under him at Ricks in 1996. I will be forever grateful for both those opportunities he gave me. My Thoughts and Prayers are with Beverly and the entire Haun Family.

I played receiver for Coach Haun at Ricks on the 1988 and 1989 teams. He was tough minded and no nonsense but he still inspired confidence with kindness. I appreciate the shot he gave me as a walk on. I will always remember the day he put his arm around me and told me that I had earned a scholarship and starting position on the team. I will never forget his fiery pre-game speeches followed by him kicking a big metal garbage can across the locker room. Thanks for believing in me Coach and for helping me want to be a better man. God bless you and your family.

Sad news. Ron and I coached a little league team about 1961 or 62. He was good with the kids, and focused and taught the fundamentals. I was learning along with the boys. My sincere condolences to the family.

I was a yearbook photographer at MHS during the 75 and 76 foorball seasons. I'll never forget his reproof to the players when they missed an assignment. "Come on, be a champion." I don't think Murray had a championship football team since him.

Coach Haun was a kind, respectful and effective football coach that was dedicated to building young men. He was my quarterback coach at Skyline High School in 1971 and taught me the love of the game. A good man!

This makes me sad. Coach Haun was my coach for one year at Murray High (I didn't play my senior year). I always liked him. A great coach and an intense coach. He always knew what he wanted and was a offensive genius. Taught us all discipline, poise, and manners as well as how to play. I met him again up at Ricks College and found him to be just the same as at Murray. He excelled at Ricks. He was always had a good quote for the school newspaper. Coach Haun will be missed. He was a good man. My friends that played for him at Ricks universally love the man.

I am saddened to my core to hear of Coaches passing. He was such an instrumental cog in my wheel in far to many ways to write a quick passage about. I have a million stories about the things Coach would do and say to us, together with his sidekick Larry Wilson, they molded a bunch of misfits into a formidable force in 1975 and we scored their first State Championship. What a ride it was and I never knew what "love" was until I saw the smiles from those two when we got back on the bus. Coach had a way of getting it all out of you with his sharp tongue and wit and was always there to pick you up and dust you off just before throwing you back in, film sessions were epic, could have written comedies from his comments during those times. I owe much to both of these men I mentioned and I never got around to tell Coach how much I loved him although I did take the opportunity to say thanks for his leadership and knowledge he passed on to me. I will miss you coach but I will never forget you and I am grateful you are out of pain now, I love you!!
