RUBY OLSON Obituary

Ruby Rasmussen Olson 1946 ~ 2010 Ruby Rasmussen Olson, our loving and beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and dear friend tenderly closed her earthly chapter of existence on June 28, 2010 due to complications of colon cancer. She was born in Ephraim, UT on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946 to loving parents Kenneth Perry Rasmussen and Fawn Braithwaite Rasmussen. After graduating from Salt Lake's East High, she created a warm and welcoming household. "Always there for everyone," she was our crimson jewel. Ruby married her high school sweetheart Dave Olson in the Salt Lake Temple on November 1, 1963. After he graduated from the "U" in 1968, they moved to Hartford, CT for insurance training. Their first assignment was Denver, CO where they raised four wonderful children. Dave's work included a move to Utah twice and Mission Viejo, CA. Through each transition, Ruby maintained a winning career as devoted wife and matriarch. She made every family member feel uniquely special. Golf, camping and family tennis invited extra joy. A faithful member of the LDS Church, Ruby held various teaching and leadership roles. Passionate about life, people and service, she cared for seven newborn foster babies, an unwed mother and a foster child while in Denver. Exceptional strength and sincere interactions were Ruby's red "trait" marks. Ruby is survived by Dave, adoring husband of almost 47 years, children Todd (Kelly) Pittsburgh, PA, Trace, Tiffinie Edwards (Charles) Anchorage, AK, and Trenton; grandchildren Alex, Chandler, Adam, Jack, Nathan, Benjamin, and Charlie; sisters Fawn Coulthard (Hollis) Wheeling, MO, June Taylor, and brother Thomas Rasmussen (Jan). She was preceded in death by parents and sisters Marlene Brown (Dale), Karma Phillips, Carolyn Noorda, brother Phillip and daughter-in-law Michele. A viewing will be held at Jenkins-Soffe, South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT, from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 5, 2010. Funeral services will be held the next morning at 11 a.m. with a viewing one and one-half hour prior to the funeral services at the River Ridge Seventh Ward, 10200 S. 1300 W. (adjacent to the Jordan River Temple), South Jordan, UT. Heartfelt thanks to the superb team of clinical and caring professionals at Intermountain Home Health and Hospice and Utah Cancer Specialists. In lieu of flowers, we suggest honoring the life and legacy of Ruby by donating to either the American Cancer Society, 941 East 3300 So., Salt Lake City, UT 84106 or Deseret Foundation-Cancer Research Services, 8th Avenue and C St., Satl Lake City, UT 84143. Dave I am so sorry to hear of your great loss. I was visiting with my daughters Susan and Sharla in Lake Tahoe and Boise at the time of Rubys passing. I have such fond memories of you and Ruby when you lived in Sandy. You were so friendly and numbered among our special friends almost like soul mates. Nancy has been gone now for five years. The time has gone by so quickly. I have two high school friends, widowers, our weekly schedule, one day at the temple and one day playing pool at the senior citizens center.
I am still doing a little whitlimg and have a beautiful Lowry organ that
provides many hours of therapy with very little musical background.
Again I am so sorry at your great loss. Wish I could challenge you to a tennis match sometime but I am afraid it wouldn't be much of a challenge.

As a neighbor and friend, as I come through the gate at night, I appreciate the candle that she has always had lit in your window, welcoming us all home. Dave, even though Ruby's life was extinguished way to early, her own "light" will forever continue to shine for us. My love to you and your family.
