Sally Mart Obituary

une 16, 1952 ~ August 7, 2015
Sally Jean Lowe Mart, a noble daughter of God, returned to His presence August 7, 2015. Sally was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2001. To Sally this was a 14-year experience that she often said she would never change because it brought her closer to her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, than any other experience. Sally was a disciple of Christ. She followed Him in word and deed. She never hesitated to share her unwavering testimony whenever or wherever she felt inspired to do so.
Sally was born June 16, 1952 to Erskine and Brenda Lowe in Memphis, Tennessee. She was raised with three sisters: Diane, Linda (deceased), and Jan. Sally loved sports. She competed on the varsity level in volleyball, basketball, and track and field in both high school and at Memphis State University. She graduated from Memphis State University in Microbiology and completed further studies in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Arkansas. She worked many years in the medical field. She and her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while Sally was in college.
On February 3, 1977 Sally married her eternal sweetheart and soulmate, Christopher Robin Mart, in the Washington, D.C. Temple. Sally worked to help Chris as he attended medical school, residency, and a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology. All the while they were hoping for children and suffering many miscarriages. Eventually the opportunity to adopt came to them. They chose to adopt children, most with a variety of special needs which made it difficult for the children to be adopted by others. Sally often stated, "All children deserve a home." She and Chris worked tirelessly to meet the needs of their children. She was a devoted and exemplary mother. The greatest desire she and Chris shared was to create an Eternal Family. (See Deseret News Article, October 2014.) http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865613463/Chris-and-Sally-Mart-create-a-refuge-for-children-build-a-family.html
Sally served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As Stake and Ward Young Women's President the young women knew of her love and devotion for them. She had a keen mind and intellect and was able to remember the names and life details of all the young woman in her stake and they loved her dearly. She served as a Primary President and on the Ward, Stake, and Regional levels as Sports Director. Sally loved music and had a beautiful clear singing voice before cancer therapy. She loved playing Volleyball her entire life and played twice weekly even while undergoing chemotherapy. She loved her volleyball friends. She earned several Gold Medals at the Huntsman Senior Games and a Bronze Medal at the Senior Olympics. She was a light and an inspiration to all.
Sally is survived by her loving husband, Chris; their children Nicholas (Trina), Nathan, Ashley, Alyson, Erica, Dylan, Emily, Jordan, Sarah, Katie, Tyler, Austin, Aaron, Jacob, and Logan; a grandson, Abel; and her sisters, Diane and Jan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Linda, and two of her children: Joshua and Mallory.
Funeral services for Sally will be held on Monday August 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sandy Crescent View Ward, 10945 South 1700 East, Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, UT and at the church on Monday morning from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the services. Please leave online condolences for the family at www.larkinmortuary.com. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108, (801) 584-5800.

I got to see Sally a few years ago at a Bethel Grove reunion. We grew up together in the same neighborhood. I can see her now walking to the baseball diamond with her bat and glove over her shoulder. She was better at sports than most boys and always one of the first ones picked when choosing sides:)
So sorry to hear of her passing. We had some great childhood memories in our little neighborhood when kids still played outside from sun up to sundown.

It was my privilege to know Sally as one of her young women in the Little Rock Arkansas Stake and then again we met again and saw each other regularly this past year and a half. I was so impressed when we reunited and she told me about the blessing that breast cancer had been toward her personal spiritual development. She is a woman of faith and hope and incredible energy. I will never forget her.

What an amazing woman Sally was. I remember when Sally and her family moved into our ward in Sandy. She just radiated happiness and service in everything she did. I was blessed to know her and watch her raise her sweet children when we lived near her in Utah. What a blessing she was to all who met her. She will be missed but I am sure not far away from her loved ones. Hugs to all the mart children and to her husband Chris.

Sally was someone I admired greatly. I remember going to see her one day while she was battling cancer and she had just gotten home from volleyball and was in the process of canning peaches. She had tremendous strength and an unwavering faith.

I also had the privilege of working with Emily and Katie in Special Needs Mutual. All my love to you and your family. Kelly Alter

Dear Mart Family, Sally was an incredible wife, Mother and Friend. As I taught many of the Mart children at Sunrise Elementary I witnessed unselfish care and love that Sally had for her children. I saw the joys Sally had watching her children learn as they traveled through life.
May your sweet memories of Sally comfort you at this difficult time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sally exemplified the qualities of Christ. She was truly a saint. I admire her optimism, her smile, her unconditional love. She had the way of drawing you in and making you feel you were important and loved. Her wonderful southern twang will always live on in my head when I think of beautiful Sally. I am so sorry to hear of Sally's passing. I haven't seen Sally in a couple of years since I moved but used to see her quite often at Curves early in the morning. I admire her love for others especially her children. She is a woman of faith, love, patience, endurance and so much more. I pray her husband and children will be blessed beyond measure.

I talked with Sally a few times at Curves. Even with cancer, she was there early in the morning to get her workout. I am saddened to read of her passing. She was friendly and very optimistic. I have a son with autism and she shared about her children. I felt revived and ready to live a better day after a small discussion. Grateful for a few passing discussions while working out!
