Sherman Davies Obituary

Sherman Duaine Davies (1930 ~ 2011) Sherman Duaine Davies passed away January 6, 2011 after a characteristically brave and tenacious fight with cancer. He was born June 21, 1930 in Riverton, Utah to Ernest J. and Bernice Seal Davies. He married Dawna Mae Gerrard on September 8, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. Sherm began his marriage by serving a two-year mission to the LDS Southern States Mission. He subsequently served for two years as a Military Policeman in the United States Army in Berlin, Germany. Sherm resided in Murray, Utah almost his entire life. He loved to work. He held positions at Kennecott Copper, Hiland Dairy, and, later in life, with his sons at 3D Communications, 3D Sheet Metal, Davies Technologies, and TruAudio. He served Murray City as a Commissioner for four years. For 15 years, Sherm owned and ran his own business, Zippy Lube and Tire. Sherm believed in doing every job "now." He valued discipline and hard work, and taught his children this by example. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping, and often could be found in his backyard doing this, wearing a straw hat. Throughout his life, Sherm served diligently in many church positions, including as Bishop of the Murray 20th/Hillcrest Ward. From 1997 to 1998, he and his sweetheart Dawna served a full-time mission in Baltimore, Maryland. Being with family members was Sherm's greatest joy. Family water fights were his "specialty." He was always there to help family and neighbors. Many neighborhood sprinkling systems were installed by "good ole Sherm." Sherman is survived by Dawna, his wife of over 60 years; six sons and a daughter: Lynn S. (Kristine), Ronald G. (Jan), Brett J. (Michelle), Phillip R. (Wendy), Bryce D. (Jodie), Michelle (Jeff Wade), Craig K. (Jennifer); 28 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol (Gerry) Murphey; and a brother, Dale L. (Merle) Davies. He was preceded in death by his brother, Keith, his parents, an infant son and an infant grandson. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 10, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the LDS River View 6th Ward (552 East 11400 South, Draper). Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral, and on Sunday, January 9 from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary (4760 S. State Street, Murray). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. Online condolences at www.jenkins-soffe.com

I was happy I could make it to the funeral today.I have just celebrated my 90th birthday and was able to drive out there from Murray, where I have lived for more than 50 years. I was neighbor to Sherm's parents for 13 years and watched some of the kids growing up. I got lost on the way out there but got in for the life sketch and all the speakers. Very lovely service for a wonderful man. I did get a quick hug from Dawna and yes, she did remember me. Then I lost my car...couldn't remember where I fond it , but 2 very nice gentlemen came to the rescue and helped locate it. My heart goes out to you all.. You have a wonderful family and I am sure you are very proud of them. May God bless you all. Love Della Downs

Dear Dawna,
I'm sorry that I had to miss both the viewing and the funeral. We went to Cedar City on Sat. for the Sunday welcome
home for our Grandson, Spencer, who just came home from the Uruguay Mission.
We have lost a great man when Sherm died. I have been proud to know him and you and your family.
Our love and prayers are with you.

Dawna and family,
Just wanted you to know that you/your family is being thought of. Reading Sherms' obituary reminded me of so many facts about your wonderful family. I have many sweet childhood memories of you. Dawna, you and Sherm have always been such an example to me. Thank you for that. I remember laughing so hard as Sherm and my dad would play jokes/tell jokes on/to others. There was never a dull moment with Sherm around! I send you lots of love from my family.

To Donna, Lynn, Ron, Brett, Phil, Bryce, Craig, and Michelle:

Sherm Davies is one of the best people that I have had the privilage to know. I have known him my whole life and he has been a big part of and a great influence in my life. From his days as our milk man with Hiland Dairy, to his days at Zippy Lube and beyond. I have always treasured my association with the Davies family and especially Sherm and Donna.

My prayers are with Donna and the rest of the family. Due to logistical reasons, I may not be able to go to the funeral, but I will be there in spirit.

Brother Davies gave me my first job out at a snow-cone shack in front of his Zippy Lube at 53rd and State when I was 14 yrs old! I was friends with his children and have looked up to him, and people like him, my whole life. What a great man he was -a truly wonderful example of what being a "man" really means. I am comforted to know that this is only a temporary separation for him and his family. Thank you, Brother Davies, for your life and example. God bless the Davies family in your grief. We all love 'Sherm' and look forward to seeing him again.
