Siegfried Szoke Obituary

Siegfried B. Szoke

1939 ~ 2025

Lehi, Utah-Siegfried Bela Szoke, 86, passed away March 31, 2025, surrounded by his family, after courageously enduring the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's Disease. His indomitable spirit shined through to the very end.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Jenny Benjats and Arpad Szoke. As a youth, he joined the Civil Air Patrol, was a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout rank. During his high school years, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He attended Fenn College, where he was on the tennis and soccer team, served in the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, and enjoyed acting in many theatrical productions there.

He transferred to Ohio State University, completed his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, and then was called to serve in the Austria Vienna Mission, where he served for 2 ½ years, and was the Mission Secretary during his last year.

After his mission, he moved to Utah and met his future wife, Carol, through a mutual friend, and they were married the following year in the Salt Lake Temple.

Siegfried earned his MBA degree at BYU, and spent his professional career in banking. He was an Army Reservist in the Utah National Guard 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion, where he achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He also served active duty during the Gulf War.

Siegfried enjoyed serving others and regularly helped neighbors, participated in church service activities, was involved in local blood drives, and was a 2002 Winter Olympics volunteer. He also enjoyed being a Scoutmaster, and was involved with Boy Scouts for several decades. In recognition of his many years of service in Scouting, he received the Silver Beaver Award.

Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life, he faithfully served in various callings over the years. After he retired, he and his wife served a mission in Texas, and were also service missionaries at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. In addition, he served at the BYU Family History Library.

Siegfried had a big heart and sincerely cared about people. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and loved to make people laugh. His genuine smile and friendly nature made everyone around him feel welcome, and his unassuming, kind, and humble qualities earned him the respect of many.

He is survived by his sweetheart of 58 years, Carol, and children Heidi (Scott), Marianne (James), Steve (Leslie), and Dave (Jenna), 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Nola, nieces and nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jenny and Arpad Szoke, and sisters Sylvia and Serena, brothers-in-law Ernie and Leonard, and niece Ilona.

Special thanks to the staff of Highland Glen Memory Care for their compassion, kindness and caring, and to Suncrest Hospice for their extra assistance, comfort and care at the end.

As a neighbor, I am sad to hear of Sig's passing. He was always friendly and a very pleasant man. Sig liked to work in his yard, and he always kept everything neat and tidy. I can remember when my husband sent out a notice to the neighborhood to encourage neighbors to help clean up the Jordan River Trail. Sig was there to help keep up our lovely trail. My sincere condolences go out to you Carol and your family.

Sig was a kind, personable man with sterling integrity. I worked with him at both Zions and Valley banks. He was always generous with his time and knowledge, helping me learn the basics of the stock market and investing for our trust clients. He will be missed, but remembered.

Carol. I'm sorry to read this. We were friends in the early days while he was studying at OSU. I'm glad he had such a full life. He was intelligent and kind.
