Steven Penman Obituary

1954 ~ 2016
Steven Eugene Penman passed away on December 21, 2016 at his home in Germantown, TN, at the age of 62 after a long battle with lung cancer.
Steve was born in Salt Lake City, UT, on Feb. 5, 1954, to Eugene and Renee (Margetts) Penman. He grew up in Bountiful, UT, and in 1972 graduated from Bountiful High School, where he met his future wife, Susan Muncey. The high school sweethearts were married Nov. 27, 1973, in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. The couple started their life together in Twentynine Palms, CA, where Steve was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for four years, advancing to the rank of sergeant.
After an honorable discharge in 1976, the couple returned to the Bountiful area with daughter Crista who was later followed by two sons, Nickolas and Tyler. Steve began his civilian career as a computer programmer for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Two years later, he joined the IT department at Sedgwick. In 1987, Steve's career brought the family to Memphis, TN where they made their home.
During his tenure at Sedgwick, Steve ascended through the ranks and served in a variety of leadership roles, including Chief Information Officer, Director of Casualty Operations, Executive VP of Specialty Operations and Chief Operating Officer. He played an integral role in the company's growth from a regional third-party administrator of workers' compensation claims to a leading global provider of risk and benefit solutions. After a storied 37-year career, Steve retired from Sedgwick in August 2016 to focus on his health and spend time with his family.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Penman; his brother, Don Penman; and his beloved wife Susan, to whom he was married for 38 years.
He is survived by his mother, Renee Penman of Bountiful, UT; his sister, Sandy (Rick) Wood of North Salt Lake, UT; daughter, Crista (Ephraim) Olson of Germantown, TN; his sons, Nickolas Penman of Collierville, TN and Tyler Penman of Germantown, TN; and five beautiful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Izzy, Chloe, Brenner, Brynlee and Berkley.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Foxhill Ward, 200 South Eagle Ridge Dr, North Salt Lake, UT. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful and Wednesday morning 11:45 - 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, UT 84010, or through the online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.

Steve was a truly kind person who was always thoughtful. He had a good sense of humor. Both qualities helped him in his many leadership roles at Sedgwick. He carefully considered issues, kept us from taking ourselves too seriously, but always challenged us to do the right thing. Steve will be sorely missed by us all.

Steve was a great honest man of integrity and service. He served the LDS Church Risk Management Office as a Sedgwick Executive with keen interest and a desire to meet the ever changing and growing needs of the Church. Steve's personal touch was one of his greatest qualities he possessed always being aware of each individual. He was a great, caring listener and always performed his business with wisdom, fairness, and kindness. He will be greatly missed by all his friends at Church Risk Management. May the Lord bless his good family with great peace and tender mercies!
