THOMAS MATHEWS Obituary

Thomas Elzo Mathews Sr. 1944 ~ 2011 Our beloved father, grandfather, husband, and brother passed away Friday, April 29th 2011, age 66, in Salt Lake City, where he had lived for the past 45 years. Tom's life began in the slanted city of San Francisco, California on August 23rd, 1944, born to Henry J. and Winona G. Mathews. He later moved, with his family to Ogden, Utah where he was raised and graduated from Bonneville High School. Tom completed his undergraduate degree at Weber State University in computer science in 1970 and his MBA at the University of Utah. Education was very important to Tom and he encouraged both of his sons to pursue their education, each of who received a degree from the University of Utah as well. His later years at Utah were spent at football games cheering on the Utes, a tradition he shared with his sons and grandchildren. His first professional job was working as an internal auditor for Kennecott Copper and he remained there for the greater of 25 years, and later for Pacific Corp, and Autoliv. Tom was a licensed CPA, and achieved high esteem in the professional organizations he was involved with, and served as president of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Travel was much a part of his job and he had the opportunity to visit every corner of the globe from Quebec and Europe to Thailand, Japan and Mexico. Tom's love for adventure began with his first car, a 56' Ford Coup, he bought in high school. He also recounted the days when he sped around in a red, MGA convertible that flew him down to Las Vegas a time or two. That spirit continued on in his travels with his family to the West Coast and mid-West, which included camping and fishing. His Caribbean vacations usually comprised of some misadventure with a small foreign car and SCUBA diving the warm blue waters. Tom was an avid distance runner, and completed three marathons and continued to run the remainder of his life. Tom was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His testimony of the Savior was a focal point for his life and family. He was married to Linda J. Noble January 9th, 1966 and later divorced. Tom was married to his current wife, Debra Sue Westlake Mathews, on August 24th 2005. He is preceded in death by his infant son, Mark. He is survived by his wife, Debra, his children, Thomas Elzo (Nichole), and Jonathan Henry (Chantelle), his grandchildren, Annika Adeline, Bevin Winona, and Grady Elzo, his sister, Bonnie, and brother, James (Clarine). Debs,
My sincere condolences. You did all humanly possible to make Tom's last days comfortable. It has been a long painful road.
There are times like this, when I wish there were not so many miles between us, but you know my love and prayers are with you.

Tom is great man who has left an amazing legacy through 2 strong, kind-hearted sons and their families. It has been a privilege to get to know him over the past years and appreciate how he opened his arms and heart to invite us to be part of some very special times with him and his family.

Debs, I am so sorry for your loss. Tom certainly seems to have been an amazing and fascinating man. I knew him (and you) only through the kidney cancer list. I hope that the time ahead will bring you peace and that you will find comfort in the many wonderful memories you two have shared... You are in my thoughts and prayers.
