Thomas Soderberg Obituary

Dr. Thomas EvansSoderberg 8/4/1932 ~ 12/19/2003 Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather  Dr. Thomas Evans Soderberg returned peacefully to his Heavenly Father December 19, 2003, while surrounded by his loving family, after courageously enduring a struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Tom was born in Salt Lake City, Utah August 4, 1932 to Rupert and Mary Evans Soderberg, who raised him to be a member of the LDS Church. Tom spent his childhood in the "Avenues" of Salt Lake City, and his love of the outdoors was born while spending time in City Creek Canyon with his brother and sister. He carried on that love throughout his life in activities ranging from fishing, waterskiing, wind surfing, and snow skiing. He was always happiest when participating in one of those activities with his ever growing family. Tom graduated from West High School, and attended the University of Utah, graduating as a Medical Doctor from the School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, an area which he loved. He then moved his family back to Salt Lake City to be close to his beloved Alta Ski Resort, and set up what was to be a long and fulfilling private practice at the Bryner Clinic. Tom also spent time as an instructor at the School of Medicine for the Department of Orthopedics, and at one time held a pilot's license and part-ownership in a small plane that he flew on many adventures with his sons. Tom had a deep passion for his work and touched many of his patients lives with time and a compassionate nature that is rare in today's medical field. His children meet patients and co-workers on a daily basis that share fond memories of him. Tom was blessed to have four sons and two daughters, all of whom he loved and enjoyed very much. Tom was an amazing father and set a wonderful example for all of them. In 1988 Tom married Eva Marie (Taunnie) Bohn, with whom he shared seven stepdaughters. He lived out the latter part of his life with Taunnie, who has been a devoted and loving partner. They shared many adventures and enjoyed taking their blended family on vacations to Lake Powell and Newport Beach, CA, every summer. Tom is preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Rupert Soderberg; and a son, Steven Thomas. He is survived and will always be loved and remembered by his wife, Taunnie, Salt Lake City; sister, Jean Simpson (Peter), Salt Lake City; children, Jeffrey M. (Camille), North Salt Lake, David M. (Linda), Greeley, CO, Scott T. (Michelle), Salt Lake City, Kristen S. Peko (Jason), Salt Lake City, and Kara, Salt Lake City. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, seven stepdaughters, and their spouses, and nine step-grandchildren, all of whom he loved and enjoyed every day that he could. The family would like to thank the staff of Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Care Center, who were so caring and wonderful to Tom over the past year. Special thanks to Marla and Marilane. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at 11 a.m., the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 So. Wasatch Drive (2500 East), where friends can visit one hour prior to services. Interment, Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery/Mor-tuary. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Tom's name to the Alzheimer's Association.

Dearest Soderberg Family:

My name is Christian Obray. I was one of Dr. Soderberg's patients. At age 11, I was being mocked by the kids in school. As part of gym class we had to run one mile on the track. I told the teacher that my hip was bothering me. He was very understanding. The other kids thought that I was fakeing so I wouldn't have to run.

About a week later I was home talking to my Mother about the pain. She was attempting to convince me to go see the doctor, but I was rather reluctant. She walked into the next room, I stood to follow her, but immediatly I came crashing down to my knees with a blood curdling scream. At that point I was ready to see the doctor. The next day my Mother took me to the Bryner Clinic to see Dr. Durhum, but he was not in so the lady at the desk suggested that I see an Orthopedic Doctor. That is when I met Dr. Soderberg. He took a couple of X-rays and said the most shocking, scary, and emotionally wrecking words....."surgery tomorrow". Holy cow, I just about died.

The whole night I didn't get a bit of rest. The next day a near by neighbor and my Father gave me a blessing of comfort, and sucess in the procedure. Nurses and doctors were rather nice. While I waited on the emergancy table I saw a familiar face of comfort. It was Dr. Soderberg.

The surgery was a sucess.

Dr Soderberg sugessted that I see him in six months to have a check up. I went back and he decided I needed another procedure on the opposite hip. That one was caught too late, but I still can walk on it, and it dosent bother me much anymore.

When I turned 12, again the good Doctor wanted me for another surgery, this time to remove all 4 pins from both hips.

I am now 18 and I could not be more greatful for the respect, gentleness, and care he gave me. He is a good man, and a very good doctor. I am so blessed to have basked in his company, and to have known him.

I was so sorry to hear of his death, and since I couldn't make it to the funeral, I just had to send my condolances.

Sincerly, An ever so mourning, and saddened patient. Christian L. Obray.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Tom Soderberg. Years ago Tom was a medical consultant at my place of work. Tom was always a very friendly, upbeat, and outgoing person. He made you feel great just to be around him. I extend my sympathies and condolences to the family.

I was saddened to learn of Dr Soderberg's passing and also of his bout with Alzheimer's disease. He was such a brilliant man and doctor. He treated me for a broken hand after a car accident several years ago and it's because of him that I have full use of my hand today.

He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Soderberg,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of your passing, and I am somewhat at a loss for words. You were so much more then my doctor you were my friend. So I will just speak from the heart. Thanks for saving my leg in October '76, thanks for knowing that a 16 year old boy was having a hard time, that I was lonely, lost and confused. Thanks for dinner at the Sizzler when I escaped from the hospital, thanks for the tickets to the basketball game. When the time came, after twenty years, that my leg would have to be amputed, thanks for the talk and letting me know that everything would be alright, and you were right everything was and is okay, thanks.

Tom was a dear father-in-law who always made me feel a part of the family, even when I wasn't anymore. I truly loved the time I spent with him and all the family and am missing Steve, but glad that they are now together, sharing the laughter and love that I will always remember. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow.
