Vey Schanz Obituary

Vey Schanz
1925 ~ 2014
SLC, UT - Vey Ione Nielsen Broussard, Schanz, age 89, passed away April 21, 2014.
She was born April 8, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George and Gracie Youngstrom Nielsen. Mom grew up in Salt Lake and, after the death of her mother at age 2, she was adopted and raised by her stepmother, Martha "Alice" Meacham. Vey attended West and South High Schools, worked as a carhop at an ice cream shop in Sugarhouse, at the US Post Office and later at the University Hospital. In 1943 she met D.L. "Bruce" Broussard who was in the Air Force stationed at the Wendover Air Base. After a six week whirlwind romance, they married and six weeks later Bruce left for the war in Italy. Two years later they settled in Salt Lake City and raised two children, Scott and Sheree. Mom was a devoted mother. She was a champion golfer at the Fort Douglas, Hidden Valley and Bloomington Country Clubs. She had a hole in one and won lots of pickle dishes. Mom later married Richard Schanz and they were together 31 years and spent much of their time traveling the world. Mom's favorite place was Africa. They lived the country club life in St. George, Utah. Mom loved to cook and entertain friends and family. Preceded in death by D.L. Broussard and Dick Schanz. Mom lived a full and amazing life.
Mom was a cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children Scott (Penny) Broussard and Sheree (Jim) Wynn; grandchildren: Mike (Debbie) Broussard, Scott Jr. (Melissa) Broussard, Sundee (Caleb) Eliason, Katie (Jake) Woodward; 14 great-grandchildren: Izzy, Grace, Taylor, Thomas, Cece, Halle, Clayson, Sam, Lucy, Andy, June, Bailee and Jamie Lynn; step granddaughter, Riquel Wynn and her children Blue and Jade.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Silverado Senior Living and Holladay Healthcare for all the love and care given Mom for the past four years.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at the Murray City Cemetery, 5600 South Vine Street. A celebration of life for family and friends will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Butler 1st Ward, 2700 East 7000 South. Online condolences at www.mcdougalfuneralhomes.com.

Vey was indeed a very special person who became part of the Salt Lake Community College family when she founded the Vey Nielsen Broussard Schanz Family Scholarship Endowment. We miss Vey and Dick terribly. May time heal your hearts.

I worked with Vey at the U of Utah. She was such a beautiful, kind lady. I have always wondered what happened to her. It is so nice to know that she had such a happy and fulfilling life. Best regards.

I will always remember Vey and her love for her sweet dog, Pepper. It was always great to see her light up in the presence of her family.
