Mrs. Beattie was my most favourite teacher. I had just come from Germany 2 years before . I remember the record she played on her own machine of Van Clyburn playing the First Piano Concerto by Tsaikovsky in Junior year High School in 1970! I became to love classical music my whole life. She encouraged me to apply to the University of Utah despite that I had no money. She connected me to one of her retired colleagues when I was having relationship problems with my foster mother without breaking trust. I loved the books she suggested. Since I am now 71, I value Mrs Beattie more than ever! Petra Novotny

What an impact your mother has had on my life! She was the reason I became a high school English teacher. She was my loving teacher when I student taught. She encouraged me to teach overseas, so I could see the world she taught us all about in class. I always cherished the days I could spend with her on summers I would return from Germany. I always hope and pray that I can be the kind of mother and teacher she always was. But of course, when I said that to her once, she responded, "No, you will be better, because I have taught you all I know. Then you will grow beyond my experience." I will always be grateful for her love, example, and encouragement.

Beattie Family,
It was so good to see all of you again! Your sweet mother was such a powerful influence on all of us as we grew up, and I am sure that she is so proud of all of you and what good you have done in your lives. The house next door will always be "The Beattie's" no matter who lives there, and all of the Hummels have many, many fond memories of your mother. God bless all of you!

I was looking for another obituary and stumbled onto this one - how sad. Mrs. Beattie was one of my favorite teachers at Davis High School! I still remember artists and books I learned about in her class! She was an amazing lady and I'm grateful I got to know her. Those in heaven are lucky to have her now!

I just returned from South Beach, Florida and my sister, Jackie informed me of your, our, mother’s passing. I say our mother, because in many ways she was mother to all of the Hummel, Randall, King, Salter,Brown,Smoot,Rodebach and Mooney kids. Mom Beattie had a profound impact on my life. She not only fed me at her table, she fed me with a passion to learn about the arts, sciences and of course humanities. I loved to sneek into her library and read her books. She instilled in me a sense of justice, history and the possibility for a more beautiful world. She had a keen sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Her laughter can still be heard every time Karyn Anne, Robi, Raelynne, Kathy Kay or Joy make a wise crack. In fact, I just got off the phone with Bobbi and in spite of her grief her spirit was strong and sweet as ever, and she had me laughing my fool head off. Your Family, our family(s), is great and blessed because of Mom Beattie.
With much Love

I am so sorry to have just learned today (4/13) of the passing of Mrs. Beattie. I would have certainly traveled up from Cedar City to attend the funeral.
As others will certainly attest, Mrs. Beattie left an enduring influence in my life. Her ability to inspire, motivate, and love her students has directly affected my life in a manner that has lasted over 25 years now. I will lovingly recall her all the days of my life and will look forward to meeting her again in the dawn of the resurrection. If men and women are to be judged by the degree to which they positively influenced those around them, then Vivian Beattie will surely be attended by the greatest degree of glory possible.

I was very sad to learn of Mrs. Beattie's passing. (She'll always be Mrs. Beattie to me.) Attending Davis High I had the good fortune to learn from many excellent teachers, but Mrs. Beattie was the best of the bunch. Her Humanities program was unlike anything else in a Utah public school, and she never let us get away with giving her anything but our best. I will always treasure the memories of that class, and of how proud she was for me years later when I showed her a magazine with my first professional short story.
My condolences to all her family on their loss, but know that she left a huge and lasting legacy among students who loved her.
