Retired Army Colonel Dan E. Hammack passed away as the sun rose on the morning of December 14th, 2015. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Carole; his daughter, Danielle; and his grandson, Pablo. Dan was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynette. He was 75. As a dedicated soldier for his country and a curious explorer of the world, he leaves behind stories from all over the world. Japan, El Salvador, Vietnam, Panama, Iran, Brazil and Nicaragua. He served 24 years in the US Army. He was also a runner, a skilled outdoorsman, a poet, a teacher, a truck driver and a devoted family man. He spent the last 24 years of his life in Barstow where he was baptized into the Catholic Church. He was an active member of St. Joseph Church where he helped with church maintenance (the group was known as the Chain Gang) and assisted Deacon Margo Saenz with RCIA. Dan valued the friendships he made there. The family thanks Dan's longtime caregivers, Lenita Pryor and Edwina Ross of Accent Care, for their loving dedication and perseverance. They also thank VNA Hospice staff for their help. The funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 505 E. Mountain View St., Barstow, California on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015 at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery on Monday, December 28th, 2015 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Soup Kitchen.
