Beverly Poore Obituary

Beverly Poore

Des Moines

Beverly Poore, 88, was born in Goodfield, Illinois on February 15, 1927, the daughter of Rollin and Mildred Nixon. She passed away July 26, 2015, at Kavanagh on 56th Street in Des Moines.

Beverly met Harold Poore at the University of Iowa while working at Mad Hatter Tea Room, and they were united in marriage April 9, 1949. Beverly was a substitute teacher for the Des Moines Public Schools and a proofreader for the Iowa Legislature for many years.

Beverly was a woman of strong faith who modeled Christianity every day of her life. She was active in her church, Highland Park Christian Church, where she was a member for more than 50 years. Beverly taught Sunday school and was also involved in many women's fellowship groups.

Beverly enjoyed volunteering for various organizations in the community. She served on the Ramsey Board, was a Cub Scout den mother, and was a member of AAUW and Friends of the North Side Library. She also enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a bridge club for 50 years.

She was a giving and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her family. Beverly will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Beverly is survived by her children, Michael (Jennifer) Poore, Karen (David) Williams, and Susan Howell; her grandchildren, Candace Adair, Lyndsey Russell, Benjamin Poore, Michael Williams, Timothy Williams, Jacqueline Howell, and Nicholas Howell; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Brown; as well as nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends. In addition to her parents, Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and brother, John "Jack" Nixon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive in Des Moines, with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Wednesday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Highland Park Christian Church or Friends of the North Side Library in loving memory of Beverly.

Bev and her husband were friends of my parents when they lived in Iowa City. (Jim and Anne Smith.) I believe Mom and Bev met at the MadHatter Tea Room - my grandma ran it. Bev corresponded with Mom (Anne Smith)ever since she moved to Wisconsin - for over 50 years! What a true and loyal friend she was to Mom. Peace and many blessings to her family.

I am another Nixon family descendant - I met Beverly for the first time at a reunion some years ago and talked with her on the phone earlier this year. The heritage we share was a common interest, and I will cherish the memory of her interest in the family. Blessings to her children and sister.

Beverly and I had the same Great Grandparents and shared an interest in our families. When we moved to Des Moines, she would call to catch up with me and see how we were doing. She was such a loving person and I truly will miss my cousin and friend. My sympathy to the entire family. Susan Cornwell Langwith

I enjoyed knowing Beverly for many years, primarily through HPCC. Her love of Christ and dedication to her church were remarkable. Beverly will be greatly missed.

Our family moved to 1010 Clinton Avenue around the start of the school year 1959. Beverly marched Mike, Karen and Susie two doors down Clinton to introduce themselves. Mike, Karen and Susie are brother and sisters, not just kids we grew up with. Beverly and Harold were a second mom and dad. Beverly never held back correcting Mike and I if we were doing something that displeased her. Harold was strong and stable. I learned to listen carefully when he made a suggestion. We neighborhood kids were lucky to have role models like Beverly and Harold. I spent 1.5 days with Beverly last November 2014-catching up on the news, talking about old times, running errands and sharing a meal. I treasure that last visit. Peace, Beverly.

Beverly was a huge part of Highland Park Christian Church. Both her and Harold were strong in their faith and community. 'Good people' - Beverly will be missed by all, but will be at peace with Harold. Blessings to the Poore family.
