Gene Gabus, and the Gabus family, will always be looked upon as those who understand and appreciate the freedoms we Americans enjoy, as well as the price we have paid for these freedoms.

We would add to what we said four years ago about Gene. This man's recognition that as Americans we live in the freest country in the history of our world, and what it has taken to keep these freedoms in place for our country, and other freedom loving people in our world, made the Vietnam War exhibit possible. Gene's recognition of this fact, together with the generosity of the Gabus family with never be forgotten and always appreciated.

Due to the recognition by Gene, and the Gabus family,of the freedoms Americans are fortunate to live with, the new Vietnam exhibit in the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum became a reality. It was my pleasure, and honor, to get to know Gene. This gentleman went to the head of the line when it came to being a true American patriot. We all will miss him.

My heartfelt condolences to Pat, Jan and Gene's family! 1002 East Avenue in Holdrege was my second home when I was in school. They welcomed me with open arms and were always so community minded even 60 years ago. Gene was my "little brother" and was fun, mischievous and sweet. I remember him coming to our farm with his sister Pat and he accidently left the tip of his finger in some equipment he was exploring. My heart aches for all of you and I know Gene will be remembered by the huge impact he has made in the community and lives of others.

Gene was a good friend and had a big heart. Gene was generous and one of my greatest supporters as director of the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum. When I told Gene about the exhibits I was trying to renovate he was the first one to step up to the plate. He met with his siblings and then told me to watch the news. I did and he donated the proceeds of his dad's cars and more on behalf his family giving the largest donation to the museum. Gene told me that his parents taught him that you have to give back to the community and he did. Words cannot describe how I will miss him and I share your loss. Praying for your family knowing that he is at rest with the Lord.

Knew Gene since the 6th grade at Franklin School in Holdrege. Spent many a day into darkness playing bsaketball at the Gabus home on East Ave. Good businessman with a very generous heart that most knew little about. The last years we would talk often, but not enough. Proud of his last fight.
