Longmont, CO
Harold Roy Schafer, 91, of Longmont, CO went to be with the Lord on August 15, 2013 at Longmont United Hospital.
He was born August 4, 1922 to Chris and Martha Schafer in Wessington Springs, SD. After graduating from high school he accepted Christ as his personal Savior at age 21. He served in the United States Army in the Philippines and Japan during WWII. He graduated from Augsburg College and Seminary, Minneapolis, MN. He married Vera Smith from Portland, Oregon, September 7, 1951; she preceded him in death on June 5, 2012. Together they served parishes in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois. In 1968 they joined the Christian and Missionary Alliance and served near Amery, WI; Sioux Falls, SD; Des Moines, IA; and Brunswick, NE. They retired from full time ministry in 1990, and Harold later became director of Evangelism Explosion at First Federated Church in Des Moines, and served in that capacity for nearly 12 years. They lived in Windsor Heights, IA, for 25 years before moving to Longmont in November, 2011.
In his free time Harold enjoyed working with his hands and showing his love for his family by doing projects around their homes. He loved taking care of his family and was very proud of all of them.
Harold is survived by three children: Merlyn (Patti) Schafer; Janelle (Rod) Shearer and LaRita (Tim) Johnson and five grandchildren: Shanna (Nick), Karissa, Bethany, Lydia (Justin), and Caleb; and one great-grandson Elijah. Also surviving are his sister Doris Schafer and brother Glen (Betty) Schafer, both of Wessington Springs, SD.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with viewing prior to the service. Burial will take place at 1:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery staging area B. What a great saint in the Lord. I remember him from Westview Alliance Church in Des Moines. I worked with the youth group there in 1983-1984. And I remember one time he took me to a district and prayer conference with the Christian and Missionary Alliance and we stayed in the same motel room. He did not want to wake me up when he got up early in the morning, so he went into the bathroom to have his morning devotions. His laugh was memorable and I will never forget it! And I will never forget his falling off the ladder and having his arm in a cast such that he had to sit down in the pew on the platform in front of church each Sunday morning to preach. He told me that he had to have Vera drive him everywhere since it was his left arm that was braced outward from his side and everyone would think that since his arm was hanging out the window, he was making a left hand turn. He had a great sense of humor, hospitality, compassion and just the best friend and servant in the Lord that anyone could have. What a blessing to have known him!

Pastor Schafer was instrumental in us starting Faith Community Church, the Christian and Missionary Alliance church in Red Oak, IA, which has resulted in so many souls being saved. He was such a blessing to us and a great personal friend, as was his godly and dear wife, Vera. If they were here today, I would say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant...enter thou into the joy of thy Lord!"
