Lee Faris Obituary

Lee Faris

Mount Ayr, Iowa

Everett Lee Faris, 79, passed away on Thursday morning, November 26, 2015 at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Lee married Martha Wilson in Grand Junction, Colorado on May 7, 1958, and they moved back to Iowa and began farming.

He was an active 4-H leader and served on the Ringgold County Fair Board. Just as he enjoyed showing cattle in his youth, a highlight of his summer was helping his children and grandchildren show cattle at the county and state fairs. Lee was also Past Master of Faith Lodge 179 and acted as Rainbow Dad to both of his daughters.

He was also recognized as a leader in agribusiness at local, state, and national levels, receiving many awards over the years. In 2005, he was recognized with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Environmental Land Stewardship Award. In 2003, Lee was named an Iowa Master Farmer by Wallaces Farmer magazine. He also received the 2012 Commercial Cattle Producer of the Year award from the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. Lee served as an officer or on the board of various organizations, including as President of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association in 1994 and as Vice President of the Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation Board in 2013. In 2001 Lee was inducted into the Iowa Cattlemen's Association Hall of Fame. Additionally, he was an original member of the Southern Iowa Forage and Livestock Committee, co-chaired the Iowa Grassland Alliance, and served on the Iowa's State Soil Conservation Committee and the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service State Technical Committee.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur and Eva Faris, his wife Martha, his son John Roger, and 4 brothers-in-law.

Survivors include his children Rodney and wife Elizabeth Faris of Mount Ayr, Jacqueline and husband Russell Stewart of Mount Ayr, and Jennifer and husband Shawn Byrd of Diagonal; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; sisters Louise Stamper and Lucille Deemer; and brothers James & Lyle Faris.

Services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 30 at the United Baptist Presbyterian Church in Mount Ayr. Mason Rites were given at the church. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.

Memorials will go toward Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation, Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation, and Ringgold County 4-H.
