Margaret L. Houseman, 83, passed from this life on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 13, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid, of which she was a member. Cremation rites will follow services on Monday. Committal services and burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, west of Boone, IA.
Margaret was born on January 13, 1927 in Sheldahl, IA, to Oscar E. and Grace A. (Ringgenberg) Carlson. She was a graduate of Kelley High School, in Kelley, IA. Margaret married James E. Houseman on July 2, 1951 in Des Moines, IA, and their marriage was blessed with five children. A lifelong resident of Madrid, Margaret was formerly employed with the Madrid Home for 14 years. She was also a homemaker. Margaret enjoyed camping, going to garage sales and picking up sticks in her yard.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, LaVern (Nancy) Houseman of Ames, Donald (Sonja) Houseman of Madrid, Dennis (Marian) Houseman of Woodward, Chris (Dave) Cook also of Madrid and Curtis (Dawn) Houseman of Monroe, IA; two sisters, Irene (Max) Gustafson of Perry and Donna (Norman) Stolte of Boone; one brother, Gerald Carlson of Madrid; two brothers-in-law, Bill Grief of Granger and Bob Burt of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Judy Robison of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren, Tony (Kathy) Houseman, Jeff (Micky) Houseman, Travis (Lynn) Houseman, Beth (Chris) Kollbaum, Cliff (Kelly) Houseman, Tonja (Doug) Greufe, Eric Houseman, Shelby Houseman, Krisha Houseman, James Cook and Amanda (Ryan) Loftus; 14 great-grandchildren, Eli H., Allie, Zach, Zoe, Daniel, Alexis, Devon, Jordan, Evelyn, Paige, Eli G., Cole, Tanner and Ethan; and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James in 1997; one brother, Marvin Carlson; two sisters, Doris Grief and Evelyn Burt; and one grandson, Timothy Houseman.
Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, at Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
