Mikhail Shapiro Obituary
West Des Moines
Mikhail or "Misha" Shapiro, 88, of West Des Moines, Iowa passed away at Methodist West Hospital on February 24, 2016. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 am on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Dunn's Funeral Home on Grand Ave. The service will be held at 1pm at Tifereth Israel Synagogue led by Rabbi Edelman-Blank. The burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
Misha was born on January 29, 1928, in Kiev, Ukraine, USSR, to Liza and Volf Shapiro. He had an older brother Mark and sister Zina.
He studied at the Kiev Medical Institute from 1947 to 1952, where he received his medical training. After graduating, he worked as a doctor in East Kazakhstan from 1952-1956. In 1956 he returned to Kiev and married Frida Gutman. He became a highly respected and beloved pediatrician in Kiev and even served as the head doctor of a pediatric clinic for many years until he retired in 1988.
In 1991, at the age of 63, he immigrated with his family to the United States. After emigrating, and in spite of the language barrier, Misha volunteered with children in Crest View Elementary School in Des Moines for 13 years.
He enriched the lives of everyone he touched with his wit, intelligence, warmth, and endless love of life, knowledge, and connecting with others.
He is survived by his wife Frida Gutman, daughter, Marina and her husband, Serge Staroselsky and son, Vadim Shapiro and his wife Sveta; grandchildren, Marianna, Rita, Gena, Elana, Jenny, Tina, and Mary.

It was a blessing to have Mikhail a part of my life for a time as I, too, was a Foster Grandparent at Crestview Elementary School and met him there. He was adored by many children as a kind and loving person. I admired him with great respect.
