Paul Scott Obituary

Dr. Paul Scott

Ottumwa

Dr. Paul Scott, 89, of Ottumwa, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 18, 2017.

Paul was born December 6, 1927, on Tate's Creek Pike in Lexington, KY. He was the 6th of 7 children born to Robert Moore Scott and Mattie Wallace Riddle Scott.

Paul attended Henry Clay High School and served two years in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, prior to attending the University of Kentucky on a full academic scholarship. He then graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1954, and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa. He was later inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Medicine.

Paul Scott met Veldine Kaye ("V") Van Roekel, a Registered Nurse, in Iowa City and they were married in 1956. They have four children: Lisa Spears (Bill); Paula; Kenneth (Diana); and Heidi Maria. He was a proud grandfather (DadDad) to five granddaughters: Lauren Charles (Jon); Kira Spears Kanner (Michael); Corina Ryan Scott, Jocelyn Ryan Scott and Rachel Ryan Scott, and a step-grandson, Armani Alarid. He has three great-grandchildren: Angelica Charles, Isaiah Charles and (his namesake) Paul Charles.

Dr. Scott joined Drs. Gugle and Kingsbury in 1959 to practice Internal Medicine in Ottumwa. He later spearheaded the design and construction of the Ottumwa Medical Clinic, which opened in 1976. The clinic employed dozens of doctors from all areas of medical practice and Paul was the clinic president until his retirement.

Paul loved life, his family, friends, practicing medicine, gardening, skiing, hiking, bicycling, humor and just about whatever he was doing at the moment.

In addition to his wife, immediate family and grandkids, he is survived by his 100 year-old sister Thelma, a younger brother Thomas and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elizabeth and brothers Robert, Russell, and John.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa with Rev. David Klanderman officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

From my diary...re my hearing loss..
Then in 1969 during a physical exam by Dr. Paul Scott, he said, Why in this day and age do you still have a draining ear? Why don't you have that ear drum reconstructed and closed up? I will refer you to Dr. Simpson in Iowa City. So in 1969 ear surgery at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City restored my hearing. Thanks to Dr Scott from a grateful former patient.
