Des Moines
Rachel Catherine Hanian, 24, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017, in Des Moines, Iowa. Services will be held 10 am Friday, November 3, 2017, at the Basilica of St. John Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rachel was born July 4, 1993, in Des Moines, IA, to Tom and Peggy (Deery) Hanian. In May, she achieved her lifetime goal of becoming a registered nurse, graduating with Honors from Grandview University. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, an Honors Society. After graduation, Rachel worked as a registered nurse for Broadlawns.
Rachel was full of life, brought energy into any room she entered, loved her son and was a great mother. She loved her friends and was always there when they needed her. She had fond memories of camping and kayaking with her father and siblings. Rachel also loved to do her makeup and get dressed up, just because she could.
Rachel is survived by her son, Liam Mattes of Des Moines, IA; parents, Tom and Peggy Hanian of Des Moines, IA; brothers, Jim (Heather) Hanian of Urbandale, IA, Tommy (Mariah) Hanian of Des Moines, IA, Nick Hanian of Des Moines, IA, and Chris Hanian of Des Moines, IA; sister, Maria Hanian of Pleasant Hill, IA; grandmother, Jean Deery of Des Moines, IA; best friend, Yvonne Campbell of Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Thomas and Louise Hanian, and grandfather, Jim Deery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Iles-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:00 pm. Contributions may be made to the family for a future memorial. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
