Richard Hutchins Obituary

Richard Franklin Hutchins, 66 of 615 E. 18th St. N., a resident of Newton since 1947, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Hospice of Jasper County's Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 1 p.m., Monday until the time of service at the funeral home. The family will also greet friends with a coffee time immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Iowa Chapter or to the Wittemberg Cemetery Association, Wittemberg Church or to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
After graduating from Newton High School in 1963, he served four years in the U. S. Navy as an engineman on the U.S.S. Wahkiakum County L.S.T. 1162. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for the Dominican Republic.
Richard worked for the United Telephone System, GTE, and Iowa Telecom, until his retirement in 2006 after 38 years of employment. After retiring, Richard worked at the Iowa Speedway from 2007-2010.
Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and listening to Jazz and Big Band music. He enjoyed having coffee with the guys at Midtown. He was a Scoutmaster for Troop 351. He was a member of The Newton Sky Kings, United Telephone System bowling team, IBEW, CWA Local 7172, charter member of the Go Kart Club, Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, American Legion Post 111, and the Jasper County Vietnam Era Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria L. (Failor) Hutchins; son, James Richard Hutchins of West Des Moines; daughter, Laura (Josh) Rand of West Des Moines; granddaughters, Mia and Zoë Rand of West Des Moines; grandson, Austin Michael Hutchins; brothers, Rodney (Barb) Hutchins of Nevada, and Russell (Sue) Hutchins of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and dearest life long friend, Dennis Farland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Virginia Hutchins.
