Richard Boyd Southard was born on September 29, 1932, at Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Boyd and Grace (Packer) Southard. Dick attended school in the State Center School District graduating with the class of 1949, and he then attended Marshalltown Community College. On January 20, 1952, Dick was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Probst in the St Paul's Lutheran Church in State Center. They lived in Marshalltown right after they married then moved to State Center where he farmed until 1963. Dick left the farm in 1963 and moved to Marshalltown. He started working at the John Deere Store in Marshalltown. After his father passed, he and his brother, Larry, purchased the Dealership. In 1991, they purchased a John Deere Store in Tama and in 1995, they purchased the Store in Grinnell. They sold the Dealerships in 2013, to retire. During these years of the farm dealerships Dick always farmed, as he was a farmer at heart until his passing.

Dick was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in State Center, NRA, Farm Bureau, Mid Iowa Coop where he was on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed flying his plane, fishing, hunting, bowling, his horses, always enjoyed a trip to Hazelton, Iowa to watch the Amish farm. He played cards with friends. He had a great interest in Winchester guns and John Deere toys, but most important to him, was spending time with his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving and caring wife of 65 years, Shirley, daughters, Teresa Southard(Dan Jackson) of Marshalltown, Deborah Southard of Des Moines, Diane(Loyd) Nelson of Marshalltown, and Denise Spinler of Marshalltown.
