Rob Messer Obituary

Rob Messer

Clive - Robin Howard Messer, 61, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at Mercy West Lakes Medical Center surrounded by his wife, family and loved ones.

Rob was born April 27, 1956, to Miriam Jane (Lamm) and Howard Leonard Messer in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He reminisced about a carefree, joyous childhood even though he was born with a serious heart condition and had open-heart surgery at the age of five. Once restrictions were lifted, he played sports, however he knew from the early age of 12 that his real love was music. He spent his teens playing in a high school rock-n-roll band and also spent time working alongside his dad gaining skill and expertise in preparing cuts of meat and other various tasks at their family-owned business.

Rob was an accomplished musician. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and took classes at Iowa Wesleyan University. He then transferred to the University of Iowa where he received a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Music Performance. He loved his college years and spent a lifetime telling stories about great times with his friends.

After graduating, he moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout his musical career, he played with various local, regional and commercial bands, musicians and entertainers. He taught drums and percussion in a unique way, was featured on several recordings with local and regional musicians, and was a gifted composer of music. Aside from music, Rob was the General Manager of Sunset Foods, Inc. in West Des Moines for nearly twenty years.

In 1986 he met Mia Osterson through mutual friends. They were married on October 20, 1990 and he shared his life with her until his passing. Together they enjoyed travel and vacation planning, cooking, entertaining, visiting family, going to movies, and hammock time. They have three cats, one named after a favorite jazz drummer, Elvin Jones.

Rob was a supporter of the U.S. National Parks Service, and they visited over one-half of the U.S. parks, monuments, etc. thoroughly exploring and enjoying them. Avid travelers, highlights included Machu Picchu, Peru; the Great Wall of China; cruising across the Atlantic; Tikal and Yelapa, Mexico; Lake Superior; the Black Hills/Custer State Park/Badlands; the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Oregon coast and the Anza Borrego area.

Rob also loved to read, get together with lifelong friends, listen to Avant-guard jazz and Joe Cocker. He would have loved to give all of his money to charity and helped anyone in need.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard; sister, Sandy and brother, Steve. He is survived by his loving wife, Mia; mother, Miriam (Doug) Smith of Florida Beach Shores, Florida; sister Pam (Gregg) Nevens and children Joe, Wonde and Martha of Los Angeles, California; and brother, Ted and children Jennie and Jake of Salt Lake City, Utah.

He is remembered as a loving husband, son and brother; a valued friend and special soul. Rob's faith, family and friends were gifts that he held close to his heart. He goes in peace, knowing he did right with his time on this earth.

A special thank you to Tom and Sally Reavely for their love and support and to Angela Mayne from Wesley Life for her outstanding care and compassion in the last months of his life.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, February 8, at Westover Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family in care of Westover Funeral Home.

In 1986, a friend and I enjoyed listening to the band Hip Pocket and Julios on Sunday evening jazz. It was a pleasure getting to know Rob (Danny, Carrie, Kyle and Vern).

It saddens me to hear of Rob's passing, as he was a very special soul who touched many hearts. My deepest condolences for all who loved Rob.

Mia, Vern Hansen shared this very sad news with me. I remember us introducing you to Rob one night when he was performing at Julio's. To refresh your memory, I was working at KIOA/KMGK at the time and had met you at a radio event and thought you and Rob would be so good together! Rob was very wonderful and kind, and we enjoyed his sense of humor so much, and his cooking! And boy, was he talented! I am glad you two got to share many years with each other. My prayers are with you and your entire family. Marne Thomas

I have such fond and vivid memories of Rob when he was a student at Iowa Wesleyan. His talent as a musician and a drummer was so evident even though learning to play the piano was a real challenge. He was always an enjoyable student to teach. I am pleased, but not at all surprised, to read that his life was full of music making, of concern for the world around him, of his love of travel and of his love for his dear family. Sincerely, Joel Brown

Rob was such a good friend to me in college. He, in his own quiet way, was always very supportive of me as a musician and a friend. He was an amazingly talented and gifted musician. I admired the amount of work he put into his art. We were able to keep in contact once a year after college, as I would take my students to the Cedar Rapids Symphony Kids Concerts and I would see him there. After that, though, we sort of fell out of touch. This is the only photo I have of the two of us. He showed me how to play the bass drum in the IWC pep band. I guess he figured I couldn't mess that up, too badly. :-) Those were fun days leaving lots of great memories. I wish I could be there on Thursday to pay my respects but this will have to do. My deepest sympathy to all who loved him.

I did not personally know Rob but my husband Mark Rose shared a locker all thru high school with Ted and I met Sandy so many years ago when I played at the McCabe house. I am so sorry for your family and know your pain. A little over five years ago we lost Mark, his brother Dave and their father Loyd in a span of 18 months all to cancer. Thoughts and prayers. Mia... I am so sorry for your loss. I can remember Rob well. He was my boss at Sunset for many years.... I can remember him taking the time to come to my husband s funeral in 2000...Then he was with me again when I got remarried. Not many bosses would be that personable. I saw him in the band drumming away a couple times at the Italian festival if I recall correctly. Then saw him a couple times at the farmers market also.

My thoughts and prayers are with you

Great old friend.....played music together ( off and on) for almost 50 years. His family hosted our rock band rehearsals in their home during our Jr. High and High School days in Mt. Pleasant.....important times in our musical development. A thoughtful, and serious guy, with a big heart and a great sense of humor!!! Mia and Rob were a great couple and threw some great parties.....!! ....Love you Rob.
