Robert Hoak Obituary

Robert (Bob) Hoak

Boca Raton, Florida

Robert (Bob) Hoak, 86, of Boca Raton, FL, died December 13 at Boca Raton Regional Hospital after suffering a severe stroke. Bob was born September 30, 1930, in Springfield, Illinois. His family lived in several Midwest cities during his early childhood, but most of his school years were spent in Des Moines.

He graduated in 1948 from Roosevelt High School, where he won the state mile run as a member of the track team. He graduated in 1953 from Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering. He was president of the ISU student body his senior year and was a member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society. Bob also ran cross country in both high school and college. Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. Bob graduated from Harvard Business School with an MBA degree in 1957.

He married Elizabeth Metcalf in 1962, and their daughter, Mary C. Hoak, was born in 1965. Bob became a construction engineer with Hoak Construction Company in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was president of H.R. Hoak (Utilities Construction) when he retired in 1973. Bob acted in some forty community theater plays, including children's plays. He served as President of the Des Moines Community Playhouse and the Des Moines Arts and Recreation Council. He was a member of The Wakonda Club where he avidly golfed for many years. Bob moved to Florida in 1992 where he served on various committees for his local homeowner's community. Bob was preceded in death by his wife in 1995.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Hoak, his son-in-law, John S. Kacik, and his two grandsons, Jacob Schaeffer Hoak Kacik and Henry Clarkson Hoak Kacik, all of Fraser, Colorado, as well as his companion of more than fifteen years, Patricia A. Denato. Bob enjoyed traveling and investing, but his family was his greatest joy, especially as he aged. There are no services planned. Contributions may be made in Bob's name to the Des Moines Community Playhouse.

I briefly knew Bob as a very kind and thoughtful person when I was a Resident Manager at Summit House. More people like Bob and this would be a classy world for all of us.
