Roberta (Bert) Matsen, 88, of Nevada, and formerly of Zearing, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2012, at the Story County Medical Senior Care Center in Nevada, Iowa. Visitation will be at Fredregill Funeral Home, in Zearing, on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be on Monday, July 16, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Dakins Community Center, in Zearing. Her final resting place will be in the Sheffield Cemetery, Rural Story City, Iowa.

Roberta Maxine Matsen was born on September 7, 1923, to Adolph and Zilpha (Emmack) Kautz in Ira, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Newton High School in 1941. After school she married the love of her life, Vernon Matsen on April 19, 1941, in Lancaster, Missouri. In 1977, Bert went back to school and graduated DMACC's Nursing Program with her LPN. She worked at Colonial Manor in Zearing for 15 years and retired in 2008. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, and camping at the Iowa State Fair for the past 41 years.

Those left to cherish Bert's loving memories are her husband of 71 years, Vernon Matsen, of Nevada, Iowa; her children, Cindy (David Huntrods) Corbin, of Collins, Kimberly (Jennifer Jacobs) Matsen, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Dale (Pat) Matsen, of Roland; twelve grandchildren, Missy, Tanya, Matt, Alicia, Waylon, Jarod, Jake, Samantha, Shilah, Dilond, Matthew, and Sami; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher, Christy, Cindy, Riley, Taylor, Trenton, Austin, and Andrew; and many nieces, nephew, and friends.

Bert was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and their wives; one son, John; and one great-grandson.
