Sammie Pettit Obituary

Sammie Pettit

Winterset

Sammie Pettit, 82, died with his loving wife, Dorothy by his side Sunday, January 25, 2015 at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.

A memorial gathering will be held Noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, January 31 at the VFW Post #8142 in Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the family and online condolences may be left for the family at ochiltree.com.

Sammie Elwood Pettit was born April 29, 1932 in Madison County, Iowa; the son of Jacob and Vella (Iiames) Pettit. His marriage to Dorothy Brinson took place on October 9, 1955 at the First Christian Church in Winterset and to this union three children were born.

During his working career, he was employed as a meat cutter, farmed, and made a living for many years in scrapping and salvage. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and through the years, had collected many other things. He also spent many hours at his "office" at Rudy's in Winterset. All this said, Sammie loved nothing more than the time he could spend with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Pettit; his three children, Jolene (Bob) Baker, Chris (Paulette) Pettit, and Jeff Pettit all of Winterset; three grandchildren, Chad (Laura) Baker, Courtney and Dalton Pettit; four great-grandchildren, Casey, Chase and Annabelle Baker and Cylas Elder; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Sammie was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alta Schaefer; and three brothers, Raymond, Thomas and Lilbert Pettit.
