Samuel "Sam" Soda, 70, of Des Moines, passed away on October 1, 2009 at his home. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton's Southtown. There will be a service at 6 p.m. by Society of Italian Americans on Tuesday.
Sam and his wife Marilyn owned and operated Saverio's vending at Nollen Plaza for 16 years and had worked at the Italian Festival for 29 years. He was a member of the Society of Italian Americans and the Early Wheels Club of Iowa. Sam enjoyed cooking, listening to a variety of music and tinkering in his workshop where his grandchildren knew "Papa" could fix anything.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 47 years; his daughters, Tami (John) Soda-Good, Theresa (Kevin) Goode, Tonette (Johnny) Soda-Stevens and Tori (Richard) Blonigan; his mother, Jennie DeFino Soda; his sister, Josephine Soda; his brother, Dan (Shelly) Soda as well as his grandchildren, Natalie, Anthony, Lexie, Johnny III, Samuel, Andrew and Nicole. He was preceded in death by his father, Tony Soda.
