ARTHUR RAINES Obituary

Age 76, of Seattle, Washington, formerly of Detroit, Michigan and Los Angeles, California, entered into eternal rest on September 2, 2006 after succumbing from kidney disease. He is survived by his wife of 50 loving years, Frances Barrington Raines; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Arthur Raines, Jr., and Romayne Hollis Raines of Atlanta, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law Hon. Albert Raines and Karen Cagnolatti Raines of Seattle, WA; sister Juanita Raines Shakir of Detroit, MI; and his four granddaughters Amara, Avery, Allison, and Ashley Raines. Art also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and dear friends nationwide. He was a devoted husband, caring father, proud grandfather, beloved uncle, and trusted friend who will be profoundly missed. Born in Smithville, GA on December 4, 1929, he graduated from Leesburg H.S. in Leesburg, GA. "Big Art" was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in Germany from 1951 - 1953. He attended and lettered in track at Wayne State University in Detroit. He retired after a distinguished and award-winning career in the insurance industry with Golden State Mutual Life, and Prudential Insurance Companies in Detroit and Los Angeles. Art enjoyed jazz, "Motown" music, football, and planting his vegetable gardens. He was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors, especially taking fishing trips with his sons throughout Michigan, California, the Puget Sound, Alaska, Canada, and in the Pacific Ocean. He was a faithful member of Gesu (Detroit) and St. Jerome (Los Angeles) Catholic Churches. His greatest joy and achievement was helping and witnessing his two sons graduate from medical and law schools. A private family Mass was held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Seattle. His body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of one's choice, or to The National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org).
