Mark Edelstein Obituary

Mark Binder Edelstein

Mark Binder Edelstein, 71, passed away on January 4 after a long illness. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, he enjoyed baseball, camping, and the Boy Scouts. He eventually became an Eagle Scout. Mark graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in English and chemistry. He received his M.D./PhD from Washington University in St. Louis, and did a postdoctorate at the Radiobiologic Institute in the Netherlands. Mark completed a medical residency and a hematology/oncology fellowship at Duke University. He worked as a physician for four years in the Netherlands before joining the medical staff at the Detroit VA Hospital, where he remained for twenty-seven years, serving as Chief of Medicine for over ten. He was a Professor of Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and loved teaching and rounding with his students and residents. Mark enjoyed bicycling in his spare time, and spent Sundays working at Bike Tech cycle shop in Detroit. He was a voracious reader and a car enthusiast. Mark is survived by Terese Edelstein, his wife of forty-nine years, and by his children, Matthew Edelstein of Grosse Pointe Park, and Katherine (Vince) Facchiano of Phoenix, AZ., his sister Jacki (Peter) Benn and nieces Madeleine and Ava, and his brother William (Barb Parmet) Edelstein, all of whom reside in California. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, or to the Disabled American Veterans.

Dear Dr. Edelstein- You interviewed me for my residency position at DRH. I rounded with you AND presented numerous cases in front of you, as a resident. After I became an attending, you asked me to refer to you as “Mark”. I could never bring myself to do that.
I will never forget the hematology slides you presented. “Look at the cell. What do you see? It is STUFFED with Auer rods(!!)”. You were the reason I ranked DRH #1 after my interviews. I still remember seeing you riding your bicycle in Grosse Pointe.
Rest In Peace, sir.

Dr. Edelstein was the best at taking care of the Veterans and teaching new doctors the rules, regulations, policies and how to get through their rotation. He would sit them all down in the auditorium and teach them. Once he left it was never done again. We will all miss you!

Mark, it was an honor working with you. Observing you in practice made me a better physician.

Dr. Edelstein was my attending when I was a Wayne State medical student at the Detroit VA a long time ago. He was the very first to inspire me to become a hematologist, back when I was not considering it at all. His enthusiasm for teaching was contagious. I still remember him fondly with his yellowed reel of peripheral blood smears he would present at VA conference :) He taught me how to read a smear, and I treated my first leukemia patient with him, experiences which are invaluable today. It was a pleasure to see him when I started my job at Karmanos as a lymphoma doctor and co-worker and he was happy to see me - his efforts came full circle! I will miss him and I am also comforted to know that he is at peace. My condolences to his family and friends.
