Andrew Beal Pumphrey Jr., was born March 31, 1930, at All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth, where his father, Dr. A.B. Pumphrey Sr., practiced obstetrics and gynecology. His mother, Dave Maud Cummins, was a member of a Texas medical pioneer family, being a physician's daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
Dr. Pumphrey graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1947, the University of Texas in Austin in 1951, and the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston in 1956. He completed an OB/Gyn residency in 1960, and was a board certified member of ACOG, American College of OB/Gyn. Dr. Pumphrey practiced OB/Gyn at All Saints Hospital for 30 years. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Kappa Kappa, Phi Theta Kappa, Tarrant County Medical Society, All Saints Hospital Board, American Diabetes Association Board and the Volunteers of America Board.
After retirement, he pursued his two favorite pastimes, cattle raising and antique Model A restorations. Later, he included the restoration of 1970 Honda mini trail bikes. He was a member of Fort Worth-Dallas Model A Ford Club, the Civil Air Patrol, and the Texas Cattle Raisers Association. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his Model A Club friends and ranching friends and neighbors.
Dr. Pumphrey was a devotee of Texas history and geography, traveling many miles on Texas back-roads. He also enjoyed the Bible Discovery Class at University Christian Church. Traveling to various countries of the world was a hobby he shared with his wife. Israel was his favorite country to study and visit. He particularly enjoyed a safari in Kenya in which he traveled the country in a Model A of the Kenya Antique Car Club.
Dr. Pumphrey followed in the footsteps of the Pumphrey family, both practicing medicine and raising cattle. The first member of the Pumphrey family to come to Texas was Dr. Reason Beal Pumphrey, M.D. who came in 1846 with Zachary Taylor as an Army physician in the war with Mexico. His grandfather, John Boyce Pumphrey was a cattleman and trail driver on the Chisholm Trial in the 1860s and 1870s.
The family is sincerely grateful to Dr. Allan Kelly, All Saints 4th Floor North nursing staff, CVICU staff and VITAS Hospice and Dr. Robert Ruxer for the compassionate and professional care given to Dr. Pumphrey. Special appreciation for the pastoral care of Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert Davis, Dr. and Mrs. Bobby Cook and members of the Univeristy Christian Church Pastoral Staff and the All Saints Pastoral Staff.

Dr. Pumphrey delivered my son in 1967. I was 20 at the time and my sister had died in childbirth three weeks before. Dr. Pumphrey was so kind and understanding and took away my fears. Later he did my surgery and I was a patient until he retired. When someone talks of their doctor, I always tell about Dr. Pumphrey. He was wonderful. Our prayers are with you.

Dr. Pumphrey delivered both of my children. He was a good doctor. He started as my Mom's doctor, then he was also my sister's and my sisters-in-law doctors. Dr. Pumphrey delivered quite a few Lopez babies.
We thank him for all his wonderful years of delivering our babies. Our sympathy to all of his family. May God give all of you the strength to get through this. Cherish all of your memories. You are in our hearts and in our prayers.

Dr. Pumphrey touched many lives. I grew up next door, and his positive energy and sunny smile always perked me up. Whether healing patients or pursuing his myriad passions - travel, vintage car restoration, etc. - he inspired many and made the world a better place. He will live forever in those who remember a truly humble, wonderful soul.

I want to convey my sympathy to the family of Dr. Pumphrey.
Dr. Pumphrey was my doctor from 1968 til he retired in the 1980's. I had total confidence in him and trusted him completely. I sought treatment from him not only for female problems, but colds, flu, bladder problems, etc. He was a real person, not just a doctor to me. Dr. Pumphrey's doctor, Dr. Robert Ruxer, is currently treating my husband for liver cancer. Both Dr. Pumphrey and Dr. Ruxer are a credit to the medical profession.
May God give you strength during this difficult time.
