Ann Marek Obituary

Ann Armstrong Marek, 75, of Georgetown passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, from multiple sclerosis, which was diagnosed in 1986. Funeral: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown with the Rev. Janice Jones officiating. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in their local area. Ann was born Feb. 20, 1935, in New York City, N.Y., to Andy and Betty White Armstrong. Her father was the Marlboro Man in the 1950s. She married Gabriel Robert Marek on July 28, 1956, in Las Cruces, N.M. Ann Marek was no stranger to community involvement. In the third grade she organized her class to sell World War II savings stamps and later when early married life landed her family in Dodge City, Kan., she assisted with a city fundraising drive yielding over $100,000 to build Front Street, a major tourist attraction. After moving to Fort Worth, Ann broadened her acting career and continued her civic activism. She studied drama at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and played many roles in Fort Worth theaters, including the lead role of Sally Skull in “The Big Thicket in 1969. With a fondness for politics, she found time to return to college where she received her bachelor's degree in political science from University of Texas at Arlington. Her measures to improve the Fort Worth community included a term on the Fort Worth utilities board; working with a group of local women to establish a child welfare unit and juvenile detention center; serving on the Community Action Agency Board of Directors; fighting local racism; serving as chairman of the Central Meadowbrook Neighborhood Association; fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society; and publicly advocating building the Fort Worth East Regional Library. Mrs. Marek also directed the 1976 Tarrant County Jimmy Carter presidential campaign and ran for Tarrant County commissioner and Fort Worth City Council. Ann was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown. A special thank-you to Lighthouse Hospice for all of their support and service. Preceding her in death were her son, Andrew Marek; father, Andy Armstrong; mother, Betty Armstrong Bowen; and sisters, Sue Armstrong and Sarah Armstrong. Survivors: Surviving Ann is her husband, Gabriel Robert Marek of Georgetown; daughters, Betsy Marek West of Davie, Fla., Melissa Marek Wheeler and husband, Keith, of Round Rock; grandchildren, Ashley West, Taylor West, Laura Elizabeth West of Davie, Fla., Darcy Wheeler of San Antonio, Wesley Wheeler of College Station, and Gabriel Wheeler of Round Rock; nephews, Peter Bennett of Las Cruces, N.M., Andy Bennett of Cambridge, Mass.; sisters, Meg Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, both of Illinios, Patience Bennett and Mary Magnum of Las Cruces, N.M.; and her soul sisters who took care of Ann for many years, Ernistine Harris of Fort Worth and Rosemary Bookman of Holland.

What can I say. She will be missed. I remember meeting Ann and Dr. Johnson's house for Wednesday lunch. Listening to her talk with the other Activists in the crowd gave me courage to go out and fight the battle for rights. I will never forget her. She is in a place of glory now and my mom has one of her good friends with her now. This is from both of us. May the lord be with your family in this time of grief. She is looking down at us and making sure we are good.

Dear Gabby and Family, What a woman! I remember having lunch with her one day and dreaming of setting up a Girl Scout Network with women from all career fields. We ended up with 450 who wanted to mentor Girl Scouts! Ann was an inspirtion to all who knew her -and so many did. I will miss her. My sympathy to you and your family. God bless her and you. Mrs. Ann Marek, wow what an amazing woman. Full of light and joy regardless of any obstacles. I could always guarantee a wonderful visit with her, she awakened my smile and sparked a twinkle in my eye. All I can say is; Lord you have received a very special woman, thank you for allowing me some precious time with her and for allowing your daughter to bring a little of your light to this place.

i had the privilege to work with Ann for several years through home health. In my many years i have never met a stronger person in all aspects of life. she was always welcoming and you felt like family when you met Gabby and Ann. She fought very hard against a disease that showed her no mercy. The world is a sadder place without Ann and I will miss her more than she will ever know.

Gabby and Family, Ann was the first person to greet and welcome me to St Lukes in the Meadow and obviously showed me that I was at home, for I am still here. I know that when it is my turn to return to Heaven, she will be there to welcome me in the gates. May light perpetual shine upon her.

One of the special joys in my life was knowing and learning from Ann. She was such a wonderful force for women and for the entire Fort Worth community. I'm sure she will be teaching the "angels" how to speak from the diaphram. Everyone from Network for Enterprising Women will remember those words from her. Peace and Love to Gaby and famiy. Ann was one of the strong characters whom I met in my public servant role. She brought excitement and candor to our discussions. She was warm and kind in her dealings with me and I felt like I was getting a fair hearing in all matters that we considered. Gabby, I hope the wonderful memories you have of your exciting times with her will bring you strength and comfort in the dark hours that are bound to come. I am glad that her life intersected with mine as I feel that I am better for having known her. May she rest in peace. Morris Matson

Dear Gabby and family,
Ann was larger than life, never allowed herself to be unnoticed, was my wife's friend for many years and was nearly her first friend in Fort Worth. I cannot mourn her as she would consider that a waste of time, but I treasure all of the memories with which she has left me. Thank you for sharing.

Love, John Johnson

Dear Gabby, Betsy, and Melissa,

My thoughts and love are with you. Two women have inspired my life. One was my mom, and the second was Ann. Ann was such a great role model to all women. I look to her as the woman that fought for us all. She made this world a better place. I will miss her, but I am determined to continue her political journey. The memories that I have of her will bring me peace and love. She has taught us all well, and I will continue to honor her path for this world.

With loving thoughts, and hugs to you all,

It feels ironic to read of Anne's passing on the first day of the New Year. But yet again, perhaps all the more appropriate. Anne brought us all new and liberating possibilities. We move into this brand new year remembering her and carrying forward the hopes and visions she fostered in our hearts. To new beginnings, Anne, yours and ours. Ultimately, they are one. Dear Gabby and all,

Every time you all came into Carshon's
the room was brighter. Ann always brought a ray of sunshine with her.
There is so much she taught me just about living. Our small conversations always left me with things to think about and made me broaden my ideas. I am and always will be so thankful to have been able to call Ann a friend. I already miss her. I will forever remember her wonderful smile.
She was one of my heroes.

Mrs. Marek, I never had the privilege of meeting you but your daughter talked about you all the time and she loved you and honored you in life with stories of you told to her friends. You taught Melissa to be one of a kind, to speak her mind and be real with people, to laugh and find humor in every circumstance, to be giving and care about her community and neighbors, to serve and give of her time to causes she cares about, just like you did. I find joy knowing you left this legacy for your family and that you are free in Heaven with no more pain. I will find you when I get there and give you a hug.

Mom you led an incredible life. You taught me how to not be judgmental on race, sexual prefernce or political values... well at least race & sexual preference. You were a strong willed woman and you taught me not to let people control me. I love you mom and remember that there are no politics in heaven!

Mom, Wow! What a life you showed us. If there was one thing that you taught me was to not let people control me. You showed me how to put humor into my life and that all people are created equal no matter of race, sexual orientation or marriage preferance. Thank you mom for teaching me to have an open mind and to speak as I wish. Remember mom there are no Politics in Heaven and its time for you to have fun with no pain!
