Born on May 12, 1936, in Pecos and raised in Kermit, Barry was the first of two sons born to Tommy and Louise Thompson. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Sue Davison, in 1955. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and devoted his life to public service. After receiving degrees from Tarleton State University and Texas Tech University, he began his distinguished 44 years in Texas public education as a middle school science teacher in Andrews. At the age of 25, he became a high school principal for the Dalhart ISD and subsequently went on to become superintendent of the Post ISD and assistant superintendent for the Waco ISD. He completed his career in education as the Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System from 1994 until his retirement in 1999. He was named both president emeritus of Tarleton State University and chancellor emeritus of Texas A&M University. He held multiple leadership positions and was the recipient of numerous recognitions throughout his career, including serving two terms as the president of the Council of Texas Public University Presidents and Chancellors, and receiving such awards as the Texas Science Teacher of the Year in 1960, the 1996 Golden Deeds in Education Award, the 1999 Mirabeau Lamar Medal for outstanding leadership in higher education and the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. He was a distinguished alumnus of both Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University-Commerce. The Barry B. Thompson Student Center on the Tarleton State University campus was dedicated in his honor in 1996. Although I never met Dr. Thompson personally, I was enormously fortunate to have begun my 46-year teaching career in 1970 during his tenure as assistant superintendent of Waco ISD. He implemented a creative, flexibly scheduled, team-taught, inquiry-based program when I taught at University Junior High, which gave me the opportunity to work with and learn from gifted, highly motivated educators and to interact with students in ways that inspired me to try and develop attitudes, materials, and approaches to learning I employed and continued to develop throughout my career. I have repeatedly paid tribute to Dr. Thompson, by name, when asked how I got started as a teacher. In reading the other tributes paid him here, I was particularly pleased to read those written by former students who profited from his classroom instruction more than a half-century ago and ever since. He obviously continued to strive for and foster excellence throughout his career and life. I regret that my search for information about his years subsequent to his time in Waco led me to learn of his passing, but via those peculiar pathways now available to us online, I am grateful for the opportunity to acknowledge the inestimable benefits I gained from my association with Barry Thompson, even from across town and long ago.

Sandra, Karol, Kim, Scott and Bart,
I was so sad I wasn't able to make it to your dad's service. My dad (Ken Wilson) has told me how beautiful and fitting it was for him. You were all such a huge part of our family during our years in Andrews and Waco, and I have so many memories of those wonderful times. I hope your memories of him and knowing how he obviously touched so many lives in such a positive ways helps bring you some peace during this time. You have my deepest sympathy and love.

8th grade science class at Andrew Junior High was an experience in learning that I have never forgotten, and Barry was the teacher that set a standard that few others ever came near. We will miss him, but his influence will continue.

Dear Sandra and family,

How sad I am that Barry has left us. Barely a month goes by that something doesn't trigger memories of your wonderful husband who made such an impact on my life when I was 12 in his 8th grade block science and math class in Andrews Junior High. Then getting to work with him while I was in college at Baylor was another expansive experience.

I will be forever grateful for the way he inspired me – and every student who came into his sphere of influence – to dream of possibilities beyond what small town West Texas towns offered, especially for girls. He will always be a hero in my life. He gave so much to everyone, and I know you as his family supported this in him. Thank you all for sharing him with so many of us.

My prayers and blessings go with his spirit. He left us too soon at age 77. My guess is St. Peter needs someone to look for creative solutions to problems in Heaven, and who would be more qualified to help than our own Barry Baird Thompson.

With my deepest affection for you and your family,

Paige Ramsey-Palmer

I am very saddened by the loss of Mr. Thompson. He was the best teacher I ever had (8th and 9th grades Andrews, Texas). Mr. Thompson expected much from all his students. He was very hard but fair. He encouraged and expected us to set high goals and work hard to achieve them. He inspired Larry Guyton and me to build a 2-stage 10 foot rocket in '58 & '59. It wasn't an Apollo/Saturn 5 but we managed to win the Regional Science fair in Lubbock. The two years I spent as a student of Mr. Thompson played an important part in my first job out of college in 1967: NASA Mission Control specialist 1967 - 1971. RIP Mr. Thompson.

Sad to hear of the passing of a great teacher. He made science interesting for a bunch of west Texas rowdies at Andrews, Texas junior high school, 1957-59.
