Colin O'Connor Obituary

Colin O'Connor, 33, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011. Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel, with a reception to follow in the Garden Reception Center. Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please donate to the National MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org. Condolences may be forwarded to the family through the funeral home. Colin was born Jan. 24, 1978, in Jackson, Mich. He graduated from the University of Arizona, first with a B.S. in 1999 and later an M.S. in mechanical engineering in 2002. One of his achievements while there was being awarded university honors for leading the development of a solar-electric vehicle, which placed first in class at the 2001 cross-country American Solar Challenge. After graduation, Colin began his career at Lockheed Martin as a project lead, responsible for all aero development. His detailed work as a propulsion engineer established him as a multiple recipient of the Silver Chairman's Award for development of a new F-35 STOVL auxiliary inlet design to enhance STOVL performance. Most recently, Colin had accepted a promotion to the air vehicle lead for Bell Helicopter. He easily could have worked for Aviation Week, he was constantly blogging and seeking out aerospace information; everything aerospace fascinated Colin. This was not his job, aerospace was his passion. Colin appreciated the smaller things in life as well. He loved his cats, especially Little One, and Jujubes. His favorite movie was "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and he was the ultimate beer snob. Colin loved his curly hair and thus loved the Texas humidity, which made it extra curly. He enjoyed travel, with his favorite destination city being San Francisco, Calif. He also loved Santa Barbara, specifically the bed and breakfast called "The Bath House" located on Bath Street. He was active in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, SAE and The Skunk Works. His generosity, kindness, love and encyclopedic brain will be missed by everyone who had the great pleasure to know him. Survivors: Loving wife, Sarah Elizabeth O'Connor; mother, Cynthia Anne O'Connor; father, James A. O'Connor and wife, Constance; brother, James O'Connor; sister, Keary O'Connor; brother, Michael O'Connor; brother, John O'Connor; sister, Rosa O'Connor; and sister, Maria O'Connor.

So so sorry to hear of Colin's passing. He was so funny! I met him here in Tucson, Az. when he was studying at the U of AZ, and Cindy introduced me to Colin. It was at one of Peg Kepner's Christmas Eve parties. What a great loss for all of us! Am thinking of Colin's family and his close friends. Love, Anne Schott

I traded emails with Colin on October 11, discussing his interest in joining Bell. I enjoyed working with Colin on the F-35 program and ADP efforts. The industry has lost a talented engineer and quality person. I can't imagine the shock experienced by Chad's loved ones of Chad's passing. I offer prayers for you, and the prospect that Chad is exploring new flight opportunities no longer bound by worldly physics.

I've known Colin since freshmen year of college when we took the courses in common program together. We ended up being roommates from junior year to the end of grad school. Two solar car projects spanned that time and it was during those times that I remember him being the happiest. He had a real passion for engineering and would frequently pull all-nighters in the solar car lab. I have fond memories of us trying to figure out how to make that project run and be successful. It wasn't always easy, but I have no doubt that he was instrumental to its success and in doing so touched many lives. Colin will be missed.

To the O'connor Family, it was my honor to have interviewed Colin for a leadership position at Bell Helicopter. Through the course of the interview and subsequent emails I got an appreciation of Colin's technical and leadership abilities. The guest book entries only confirm the opinion I had developed in a very short period of time. You should be proud of Colin and his accomplishments. Your family is in my prayers and I can only hope that you can accept that God must have another use for this talented young man.

In friendship he offered trust and respect, never asking anything in return. Not once did we witness him acting selfishly.
He was a joy to be around and his crazy laugh always lifted the mood in any room. Malinee and I will miss him dearly and are grateful for the time while he was with us.

Looking back on Colin the few things that stand vivid in my mind were:

At Grandpa Jim's 75th Birthday I was debating on fun names to put him under in my phone and he requested to be called "Oh Chopped Liver"!

Also a couple years back when he had come home for Christmas and he was attempting to teach the kids how to juggle. It was an epic fail but fun to watch.

I am proud to say that this light of entertainment is my uncle and he will be missed dearly by all that called him family or friend.
