Daniel Cumbie Obituary

Daniel "Dan" Kent Cumbie, 56, went to be with his Father in the early hours of Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011. Funeral: 2 p.m. Monday at The Hills Church of Christ in Fort Worth. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Dan was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Fort Worth to Leland Franklin and Virginia McKillip Cumbie. The third of four children with a large but close extended family, he learned from infancy the importance of a loving family, constantly surrounded by loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as his immediate family. He graduated from L.D. Bell Senior High School in 1973, where he met lifelong friends whom he remained close to, up to his final days. In 1974, he met the love of his life, Linda Louise Chance, and in June 1977, they were married and together raised three beautiful daughters. His family and friends were his most prized possessions. A man of few words and a big heart, he always welcomed those who needed a listening ear into his home and into his heart. Dan was a lover of the outdoors. In the summer, he hitched up his boat at any opportunity and headed to Possum Kingdom. And as autumn settled in, he looked forward to an annual campout in the grasslands with his brothers and friends, where he enjoyed sitting around the campfire telling stories and listening to music. He had a passion for music and would spend hours each day listening to different versions of his favorite songs or playing guitar. Dan heroically fought an eight-year battle with infections and autoimmune disease, beating the odds time and time again throughout more than 50 hospital stays. He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Franklin Cumbie, and sister, Marcia Cumbie McKenna. Survivors: His loving wife of 34 years, Linda Chance Cumbie; daughters, Leann Cumbie Turner (Randy Turner), Lauren Cumbie and Lisa Cumbie; mother, Virginia McKillip Cumbie; brothers, Guy Cumbie (Kamee) and Brent Cumbie (Penny); brother-in-law, Jim McKenna (Annalene); and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also survived by his and his children's beloved dogs, Maggie, Leo, Ally and Lilly; and cats, Kitty, Sunny, Pretty and Puff.

It has been over 3 months since my Daddy went Home to be with his Heavenly Father. I still miss him more than I can put into words. I think of him constantly, at least 20 times a day, and dream of him in my sleep. I take comfort in our Lord, knowing that he is in no more pain, no more doctors; no more hospital visits. Behind every song I hear, food that I eat, the nicknames I have for people, I can still feel his lively loving spirit, and rejoice at the fact that we will be reunited in His kingdom when it is time. Until then, I will keep playing Pink Floyd & Eric Clapton, keep waterskiing at Possum Kingdom, and keep building campfires at the Woods when we go camping, and keep loving family, friends, and beloved pets just as my Daddy would have. It's not a goodbye, it's just 'see ya later' until we meet again in Heaven. To my Daddy, my Hero, my Best Friend. I love you Melon.
Love,
Leann Michelle (Muffy)

Oh, what a great loss of my wonderful Doodles. I've heard that a girl's first love is a good daddy. My broken heart is aching everyday, but I rejoice in knowing we will meet again. But for now, "the tears will fall like rain," as he used to say.

I long to hug him and lay in his bed and tell him about my day or listen to his music selections for hours on end while I bake in the kitchen. The house feels so empty without his presence.

But today and for eternity, he is lively and well and free of the pain that burdened him for 8 years. He is walking tall and strong, in the company of his own daddy and big sister and other loved ones.

My sweet, sweet Doodles is gone and I miss him everyday.

There has never been a time while thinking or talking to others about close friends & fun times in high school that Dan was not part of, if not the main topic of the conversation.
Dan was a very special & close friend of mine. He still is! and always will be!
Although it has been many years since I last spoke with Dan, it was no surprise during the service listening to others that have become close friends to Dan, how much they enjoyed the same special qualities that he had that I enjoyed and will always remember as well.

It has been many years since I worked with Dan in the grocery business. I can still remember though, that it was much easier to get up and go to work on the days that Dan was there. His great humor and easy going personality brightenened the days of any one he worked with! I am sorry to hear of your tremendous loss and hope his special memory will comfort you. I know he will be someone I will never forget. Bless his whole family.
