Cousin David and I were schoolboys when the ball point pen was invented. We were at Grandpa Grabers' farm for Christmas when we got our first pens, and spent a lot of time writing with them just for the fun of using them. Yep, that's how old we are. I remember when he and his brothers and I went down to Grandpas pond to build an igloo. By the time one of the adults realized how long we had been there and called us back, our hands were blue. I remember all of us standing at the sink with our hands in cold water, crying from the pain, but that saved us from frostbite. I remember all of us playing in the hayloft in the barn, and leaving a big mess for Grandpa and Uncle Bud to clean up. We grew up in a time when TV was a rare thing, and calculators, computers, VCR's and cell phones were unheard of. It was a time when a young boy could walk around town, and could ask for and receive help from strangers. Unlike today. I always thought of David as the quiet Huebner cousin, but I also remember him telling about jumping across the tops of grain elevators in Wilson. Several months ago, we talked on the phone, and recalled some of the times we spent together as kids. It was a fun conversation.
God speed, David.
We will meet again.
