David Pillow Obituary

David J. Pillow, M.D., 90, died peacefully at his home in Colleyville on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Memorial service: A private service will be held at his home with the family he treasured. Memorials: If you desire to make a donation in his honor, please do so to a favorite charity. He was born to the late Jack and Hilda Pillow on June 9, 1923, in Austin. He graduated in 1940 from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, where he met his future wife, Annabel Lee McClary, whom he married in September 1944. In the interim he joined the Navy in 1941 and rose to chief pharmacist mate by the time of his honorable discharge in June 1946. He served on the USS North Carolina battleship in the Pacific during World War II. With encouragement from Annabel, he set out to become a physician, attending Texas Christian University for pre-med from 1946 to 1949 and then George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., from 1949 to 1953. He graduated first in his class and completed his internship at D.C. General Hospital in Washington, D.C., from 1953 to 1954. He returned to Fort Worth for a one-year general practice residency at John Peter Smith Hospital from 1954 to 1955. He then started a private practice in 1955 in North Richland Hills, which quickly became the Pillow, Rush, Jacobson & Bell Medical Clinic. He did everything for his patients from delivering their babies to surgically removing their infected appendix to managing their care when they had a heart attack. He was one of the founders of Glenview Hospital in 1961, later known as North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills. He later served as president of the board of North Hills Hospital. David took a break from private practice and became the director of the family practice program at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth from 1972 to 1978. He returned to private practice in North Richland Hills from 1978 to 1989. He loved to teach and was the co-director of the nurse practitioner program at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1978 to 1991, then instructor in pharmacology until 1994. From 1989 to 1996 he did locum tenens with Whitaker Medical Group, and from 1996 to 2000 he worked caring for seniors in the Senior Medical Clinic of North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills. After a two-year retirement, he opened Pillow Medical Clinic in 2002 at age 78. He cared for Medicare patients until his health finally forced him to retire in 2006 at age 83. He was loved by his patients and he was always a leader. His contributions were honored in 2005 when North Hills Hospital established an annual Dr. David J. Pillow Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was the first recipient. In 2006 the city of North Richland Hills named a new city park the Dr. Pillow Park to honor his lifetime of contributions. In 2008 North Hills Hospital named its new senior health clinic the Dr. David Pillow Senior Health Clinic. He spent rare vacations hunting and fishing and going to medical meetings to keep up his skills. When asked in his later years what was the most important thing in life, he always said family. He considered his children his legacy and always encouraged us by his example to work hard and make a difference for others. The world will miss him but his legacy lives on. Survivors: The love of his life and biggest supporter during their 70 years of marriage, Annabel Pillow of Colleyville; older sister, Barbara Debusk of Marble Falls; daughter and English teacher, Kathleen Hudson of Kerrville; son and ER physician, David Pillow Jr. of Dallas; son and retired recruiter in the accounting industry, Charlie Pillow of Grapevine; daughter and retired nurse anesthetist, Carolyn Pillow of Grapevine; son and ER physician, John Pillow of Grapevine; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In February of 1983, Dr Pillow delivered my daughter at Glenview Hospital. He was our family doctor many more years after that.
When I heard he had passed, I was truly heart broken.
I pray for the family to remember this amazing man like all of us who are former patients
God Bless all the Pillow clan!
See you Doc, in heaven

My family started seeing Dr. Pillow in 1955. He treated my Grandmother, Parents, my sister and myself. He delivered my three girls, removed all their tonsils, and repaired an umbilical hernia. He did not have to refer you to a specialist. He was the specialist, professionally and in his personal life! He will be missed!

Ol' Doc Pillow, as we lovingly referred to him at our house, was the first doctor I remember going to as a child. He performed my appendectomy and exactly 2 months later delivered my daughter. I joked with him (during c-section) about getting all he wanted out of there cause he wasn't gonna get in there again. His answer was to ask the attendant for some marbles to leave behind so he could go get them later. :) He was a great doctor and man. He will be missed by so many. Rest in Peace Sir!!!

How lucky our family was all those years ago to move to NRH and meet the Pillows; a family full of warmth, love and fun. It was only natural that Dr. Pillow would be our physician as well. He was the consumate example of what a physician should be, and we are all the better for it.

I'm sure Jesus had a big smile on His face when David entered Heaven but it is sad news for us here. David
was my doctor, my children's doctor, my friend. Time has passed so quickly and the many times I have planned to call you Annabel just slipped away.
What a great friend he was to my family and to the special needs children David helped us with at Camp Hope. I now live in Georgia, married to a retired pastor and I can't believe that I am now 83 years old.
Thank you for sharing your husband with each of his patients for such a long time. I pray you are in good health. With love, Jo Ramsey

My family was among the very first patients of Dr. Pillow when the clinic in Richland Hills first opened with just Dr. Pillow and Dr. Rush. I stayed with him until he left due to health and went to JPS to teach others how to be a family doctor. He was truly a wonderful, caring, brilliant doctor. My love and sympathy to Annabelle and all of his family.

Sounds weird but I have many fond memories of being sick and being tended to by Drs P and J. They set the standards by which all my other physicians have been assessed through the years.

As thousands of North Richland Hills citizens know, Dr. Pillow was one of the pillars of the community. He was the Dr. who gave physicals to football players in the Birdville district. I had the occasion to do some electric work at his home when I had a small contracting business in 1984.
After I completed the work, I sat at their dining room table and visited with Dr. and Mrs. Pillow. They treated me like a guest in their home. They were wonderful people.
Johnnie Reagan and I used to sit with his family in church on Sundays when we were 7th graders.
We have indeed lost a great man. May God bless his family in this time of sadness.

How blessed I am to have had the privilege of being the god-daughter of David Pillow. My mother and daddy were TCU buddies with David and Annabelle. Years later, after graduating from medical school, my Daddy was the Jacobson quarter of Dr. Pillow's medical practice. The years and years of fun times with all the Pillows are highlights of my childhood. Dr.Pillow also took wonderful care of me as my physician for most of my life. He delivered both my daughters and cared for them, as well. David Pillow was a BRILLIANT doctor who gave so much to this Ft. Worth medical community. His legacy remains, but he will be sorely missed. Few doctors today truly love their profession and their patients with the passion that he did. My peace today is knowing that Daddy got to spend time with Dr.Pillow during his last days here on Earth, and now he is in Heaven with my mama..... covered in her orange lip-sticked kisses!

I had the privilege of working for Dr. Pillow as my first job. He showed me how to show love and compassion to patients. He was always very caring with his patients and his employees. I learned a great deal about life and the medical field from him. He will forever be in my heart and I think of him often. My prayers and condolences to Annabelle and family. Heaven is a better place now that he has joined the Heavenly Host.

He gave us our blood test to get married in Jan 1964 and we had our 50th anniversary this year. Years later when I went in to see him for a bad cold he saw a mole on my arm and said he did not like the looks of it go have it checked. We are so glad we did and now wonder if any doctor today would take the time to even notice. We still go to the clinic on Glenview and we will always remember Dr. David Pillow and devoted wife Annabel.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the family. I was so blessed to have met Dr. Pillow when I was the Athletic Trainer at Grapevine High School. I had John in class and was in need of a team doctor and got introduced to Dr. Pillow. Dr. Pillow served me and the athletes at GHS generously and without compensation. Dr. Pillow delivered my son, Josh. He also cared for me, my wife Pat and her parents. We were always friends and I cherish good memories of him.

Annabel and Family,
We are so saddened at your loss. We have held Dr. Pillow in our hearts and prayers since he was our doctor.
Our memories are family tradition: how Chris was born on time before his vacation began; how he can back from vacation to deliver Mike, and how Jenn was born early and David Jr. monitored her in NNIC. I remember always getting a mini physical at each visit because Dr. Pillow believed in treating the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. He spent time getting to know his patients and shared his wisdom with them. As a youngster, I didn't appreciate the advice until I hit 40 and his words came back to me!
He will be missed dearly, but he lives in our hearts. We pray that during this time, you strongly feel and know God's peace and love.

Dr. Pillow cared very much about the health and well-being of his fellow man; in fact, he devoted his life to this cause and excelled in many areas of medical care. We appreciate the fine man Dr. Pillow was and honor him for the legacy he left behind. Our sympathy, love and prayers go out to his dear wife, Annabel, and their five children.
