Janice and family: I can only empathize as to how hard this season is without Fred. It had been so long since I had seen you both when I heard the shocking news, after formal respects had all been paid, that I was hesitant to "intrude" without some more formal excuse or reason. Having lost another of our law school classmates this week, though, I have finally realized that no time will ever be the "exactly right" time to tell your friends' families how much they meant to you, and the real fault would be never to take the time.
Among the encomiums to Fred's wisdom, fairness and wit, no one has yet mentioned what a wonderful speaking voice he had. When he found you, Janice, one of the things that struck me profoundly was how beautifully you were matched in that quality: both of your speaking voices were balm to the ear, and both of you honored that gift with the sagacity of your speech. He was a joy to listen to, to converse with, and together, you were music to me.
I can remember Fred's kindness, his stories, his insights, and best of all, I can remember hearing him say many of those things in that beautiful voice. He was a dear friend, whose generosity of spirit is such a loss. I'll hope to have the opportunity, on some not-so-formal occasion, to reminisce with you in his honor.

To Janice and family, I just today learned of Fred's passing. The holding image I have of him was coming down the steps of St. John's at my John's funeral last February. It was with overwhelming love to my heart that the "old band parents" came out to pay respect to John - those were some good years when our kids were together at Nolan. I am so sorry I missed paying formal respect for Fred but please know I will have you in my prayers.

I was shocked and saddened by reading the news about Fred's passing. A respected attorney for many years and certainly a busy man, Fred always had time to devote to the Bruce Shulkey Sugar Daddies, a father's group for an elementary school in Wedgwood. Fred was one of the finest men I have ever or will ever know. His contributions to the community will be felt for many years. Rest in Peace Fred. My sympathy to Janice and your family for your loss.

Dear Schattman family,
It was an honor to have known Fred during my 22 years as a law enforcement officer. Today, it was a privilege to meet his family at the beautiful mass and eulogy. Well Fred I know your in heaven, and I'm not sure how good I have to be to get there. But if you hold the back door open for me, maybe I'll be able to sneak my way in. Until then, I will miss your warm smile, quit wit, and hearty hello.
Sincerely,
Kevin K. Brown

To the Schattman family,
Recently, I was in my office downstairs from Fred’s. Fred came in and had a seat at the desk we had set up for him across from mine. Since Fred was one of, if not, the smartest legal mind I knew. I asked Fred a question about a case that I was working. Fred looked at me and immediately began telling me a story, as we all knew Fred could do. Working with Fred almost exclusively for the past ten years, I thought I had heard all of his stories, once, twice, ten times. But as I listened I quickly realized I had never heard this story. So I became much more attentive, because if Fred told you a story you would learn something. At the conclusion of the story I looked at Fred and told him that I had never heard that story before. Fred looked through the top of his glasses at me and told me, “Well Kevin I try to hold back some stories for my good friends so they don’t have to listen to the same ones over and over again.” Well Fred was MY Assistant United States Attorney; he was my friend, and a mentor. I learned so much from Fred and I will truly miss him. No one will ever be able to replace him. We can only hope to live up to the high standards he set. In closing, my favorite “Fred saying” was “Well, everyone has to be somewhere.”

We send our sincere condolences to the entire Schattman tribe. We will all miss the exuberance that Freddie always displayed.

My sincere condolences to the family of Fred Schattman.
As Judge David Belew's judicial assistant, I had many opportunities to interact with Fred. He had an awesome understanding of the law and was always well prepared. He was professional, ethical, and fair, and he could always be counted on to share his great sense of humor. It was obvious that Fred enjoyed his role as a federal prosecutor immensely. I know firsthand how much Judge Belew respected Fred and enjoyed having him in his courtroom.
Sincerely, Michael Ingram

Martha and I are so saddened by Fred's passing. Martha knew Fred as a dedicated, prepared prosecutor and an advocate and help to her in setting up new computer systems at the U. S. Attorney's Office. I was privileged to work with Fred on several cases while I was at the FBI. Fred was always open to all members of the team, complimentary and appreciative of my work, and promoted team spirit as he lead our teams with his professionalism and expertise. As recently as October, Martha and I saw Fred and enjoyed reminiscing about family, friends and past cases. As always, he was happy to see us. We are so glad we had that time. He has always been there for us and we will miss him.

I sat in the office next to Fred. I saw him coming and going all day long. Fred always had a smile, comment or some humourous thing to say in passing. My favorite was “Are you having fun yet?”, to which my reply was always “Not yet Fred”. Every evening when I would leave, Fred would be sitting at his computer and I would say “Goodnight Frederick” and he always saluted me. I will miss these daily things we all take for granted. More than anything, I will miss the Fred stories. I loved it when he talked about his family. Fred adored his family and his eyes would light up when he talked about them. He would tell me how he would talk to his grandchildren so that they would remember him by what he said, and how he loved teaching them. Fred was a great teacher to everyone he came in contact with. It may have taken awhile to get there but he always made sure there was a message behind everything he said. He touched so many lives. There was no other person on this earth like Fred. He definitely left his mark and the world is such a better place because he was here. Fred’s spirit will forever be carried in the hearts of those he touched.
Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names.

Fred's memory will be cherished. I came to know and work closely with Fred through the parents' organization for the Nolan Catholic Viking Band. I cannot think of anyone who exceeded Fred in his energetic, positive, sometimes humorous, and always humble manner. A true prince of a guy and my life is the richer for having known him. January 7, 2011
I knew Fred primarily through my father, Paul Gartner, an AUSA who worked with Fred in the Northern District and who preceded him in death exactly four years to the day. From Dad's stories, I knew Fred to be a brilliant legal mind, trusted colleague, and extremely hard worker. From my own experiences with Fred as I began my own legal career, I knew him to be a great mentor. However, my most treasured memory of Fred comes from a few months after my dad died. Members of the US Attorney's Office helped me move into the new house I had purchased just before Dad died. Although Fred was the oldest in the group, he worked the longest, and singlehandedly cleaned up my yard and hooked up my refrigerator! Those in the group who knew him better weren't surprised, and said that was just the type of guy Fred was! Fred's service and sacrifice that day epitomized the type of man he was, and helped shine a bright light into what had been a dark, sad time for me.
As our families have shared similar pain, my prayer for you is that you will experience the same comfort in your grief that Fred helped provide to me in mine. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Fred used to have a sign hanging on the wall in his office quoting Emerson, "Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Anyone who ever saw Fred's office would understand why that quote appealed to him.
Although I only worked with Fred a short time at the U.S. Attorney's Office, it was long enough to know that he will leave a long and lasting legacy to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him for any period of time. My deepest sympathies go to his family.

At this time we are selfishly asking WHY God wanted Fred so very soon! He was one Good Guy in our world of uncertainty. We were Blessed beyond all belief to have been honored by your family's friendship. From the days of Trash Pulling doing Sugar Daddies Duty to the taking Jac to Colorado with your family, Fred was always special. Now, a hole is in our hearts, yet, Heaven is blessed with a true sweet soul. Our deepest sympathies to you and your family.
Many Blessings upon all of you now and forever.

Fred was a true inspiration to anyone who worked around him. A champion of justice who worked as hard to help others as he did prosecuting those responsible for committing crimes.
As a narcotics officer I had the honor of working alongside "Freddie" on several cases. He made me a better investigator as I am sure he did for many others.
Defense attorneys must have hated going up against him and Officers could not have had a better prosecutor on their side.
He was one of us. You could not have asked for a better person to be on your team.
A mentor. A teacher. Kind and gentle. Tireless and fearless.
He will be sorely missed.

Dear Jan & family,
Being a newbie in 1985 as Judge Mahon's court reporter and to this day, I very much admired Fred in so many ways. Fred was a great man in the ways that matter most. He was a father who beamed with love when he spoke of his children. He was a public servant who loved his neighbors and believed they were “worth the fighting for.” He was a lifelong student who never tired of learning. He was a mentor who never tired of teaching. He will be missed and I am certain he will never be replaced.

Fred lived and implemented the instructions of the U.S. Supreme Court that a prosecutor "...may strike hard blows, but is not at liberty to strike foul ones." He well knew what he could do, but he did what he ought to do. He understood and exercised his duty of prosecutorial discretion to a degree unsurpassed by any prosecutor I know of. In spite of pressures from judges, agents or supervisors, Fred did what was right.
He was, as was Saint Thomas More, a Man For All Seasons. His legacy shall live on.

My thoughts and prayers are with Schattman family during this most difficult time. I was introduced to Fred during my early career while investigating narcotic offenses. I was constantly impressed by Fred's "why don't we try that" attitude towards making and prosecuting criminal cases. Unlike most prosecutors, Fred was able to put himself inside the mind of both the law enforcement officer and the prosecutor. He would suggest possible different approaches to prosecution that maybe had not been tried time and again. We will all miss Fred...greatly.

My deepest sympathy goes to the Schattman family for their loss. To Janice and children, and to Mike, Paul and Sarah,
Fred was a young child when I taught Mike in the second grade. As principal of St. Alice School, I worked closely with Ann Schattman who was home and school president. As I read the Star Telegram tribute to Fred, I thought how brilliantly he appears to have inherited the best gifts of both Ann and Denning. I join all those who surround you now with the support of prayer and gratitude.

Rest in Peace my friend. I cannot think of a more just and fair prosecutor who sought equality and fairness on both sides of the courtroom. Never did he take justice to the extreme; however, when it was time to play ball, he went straight up the middle and never fumbled. I am sadly going to miss every history lesson behind every question or problem I came to him with. What should have only taken 15 minutes, turned into a war and peace novel...but that's what good teachers do...provide you with a full understanding of your problem and then offer the solution....he will always be one of the best prosecutors, a good friend and a mentor in my eyes. I can only hope to be as knowledgable and just as you someday...May God watch over you and your family during this time of sorrow and loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. God Bless and Semper Fi my friend.

May God bless the family and friends of Fred and may we all be thankful and mindful of the many repeated good deeds and kindnesses he did for and gave to so many.
I am thankful for the opportunity I have been given to have enjoyed - and still enjoy - a full legal and judicial career. With military service as a lawyer, a private law practice, service as a state judge on a trial and appellate court before having been given the right to serve as a United State Magistrate Judge in the Fort Worth Division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, I assumed that I had a good idea of what it meant to be a public servant. That was before I met Fred.
In a legal tribunal, he was typically several steps ahead of the other lawyers and judges with, against and before whom he practiced. He was a savvy and effective prosecutor in the state and federal courts. Yet in life and in law his primary thoughts were never to win or convict a defendant, but to help all those he was working for or against, to bring about true justice for all.
He lifted that part of the Boy Scout oath, which requires a scout “to help other people at all times” to new heights. He knew the duties and responsibilities of those he worked with and assisted them in doing the best job they possibly could. He helped law enforcement officers, probation officers, district clerks, law clerks, investigators for the defense and government, witnesses, jurors, court reporters and others. And yes, judges. Fred not only epitomized the words “public servant,” he was simply a “servant.”
Thank you Fred Schattman for all you did for so many. Thank you for your living example. Thanks to your family and loved ones for sharing an amazing person with so many others. My family joins in this expression of tribute and sympathy.

I was so saddened to learn of Fred's passing. As Judge Means's career law clerk, I have worked with Fred often. I could always count on him to assist with any of the arcane legal or procedural questions we ocassionally had. Thoughtful, committed and hardworking are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Fred. I have only been part of the Sugar Daddies organization for a short time, but one thing I noticed from day one was that Fred was one the hardest working men in the group. No matter what the event or task, you could always count on Fred to be there and to provide his unwavering support. The organization is where it is today because of the dedication and commitment to excellence that men like Fred display. Your fellow Sugar Daddies are definitely saddened by your unexpected departure, but your memory will live long in our minds.

My first working experience with Fred was in the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office in 1978. As a young Assistant DA in the Civil Division (at that time), Fred was a very high energy public servant with an enormous intellect. He progressed quickly to the most complex cases, and performed at the very highest level. Fred then moved to the Criminal Division, where he prosecuted complicated white collar crime cases as well as serious drug dealers.
In 1985, Fred and I both became a federal prosecutors. I had the opportunity to work him in that role as he quickly began prosecuting some of the biggest, most serious drug conspiracies and white collar fraud cases, as well as many others. At his death, he had become one of the premier federal prosecutors in the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas, which covers 100 counties in North and West Texas.
Throughout his career in law enforcement, he maintained a very high energy level in protecting the citizens of this State and Nation from the most dangerous criminals. He was over the years rewarded from time to time with death threats, and was never deterred.
Fred was a fine man, a great public servant and a good friend. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues.

Fred will always be held in the highest regard by the federal, state and local law enforcement community, particularly by those officers working narcotic cases. Fred was a champion of justice and was always available to help agents and officers with advice and assistance. He will be greatly missed both as a prosecutor and as a friend.

I worked side by side with Fred for several years, both at DA's office and the U.S. Attorney's office. He was one of the best partners I ever had. Serious, humorous, dedicated, responsible, untiring, studious, ethical, unflappable. And a friend and father to depend on. North Texas is a better place because he was here.

I have known Fred for thirty years, since the TCDA days. Fred was a hard charging prosecutor who handled drug trafficking cases with an unyielding passion, but never lost his sense of humor during the most difficlut cases. His wisdom and friendship will be missed. May God lay his hand of peace upon his family and guild them through their sorrow and this difficult time.

Fred Schattman was a lawyer who could do it all and do it all with integrity, morals and unyielding ethics. He was the go to person on legal issues and trial attorney of great skills. He will leave a void in the U S Attorneys office. He was a great man and I'm proud to have known and worked with him. God bless.

Fred was the fount of knowledge in our office. Whenever another prosecutor didn't know something, Fred was always ready and willing to be of service. He was a great warrior for justice and north Texas will miss him greatly.

Dear Fred. You were such a kind and encouraging fellow, working for you was a delight and a challenge. Memories of holding Teresa on my lap, feeding her pb & crackers when you had to go to court, remembering all the interesting courtroom moments and watching how that mind worked. I've spent the last few days remembering you, from they way you walked to the funny things you would say. Take care my friend and know you will be missed by so many folks. You were loved.

Fred was the epitome of every hard charging, hard working prosecutor across this great country. He did as much as any one person could to help stem illegal drug trafficking in The DFW area. Through all the long hours that every successful prosecutor must endure, he never lost his sense of humor or biting wit. I salute you Fred for all you did to make Fort Worth safer for future generations.
