Jack Harter Obituary

Jack Harter passed away suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014. Celebration of life: 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, 800 West 5th St., Fort Worth, 76102. Inurnment: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy., Dallas. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish may make a donation to the TK Ranch, P.O. Jack was born Nov. 22, 1939, in Cornwall, N.Y., to Maude and Leon Harter. He married Kayren Poff on Dec. 28, 1968. Together they traveled the world with the United States Air Force, raising their family in Iran, Colorado, Texas, Maryland, Ohio, and Illinois. Jack retired after 21 years in the Air Force, serving in Thailand during the Vietnam War, and also in Korea and England. After retirement, Jack and Kayren took the opportunity to travel extensively, most recently to Italy and the Mediterranean. He was a very active member of the Lone Star Officers Club as well as longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. He was proud to be an organ donor, and was able to make a contribution to the tissue bank at the UT Southwestern Transplant Services Center. Jack will be remembered for his love of family, unfailing dependability, great wit, positive attitude, intelligent and organized mind and especially his great laugh. His favorite pastime was supporting his family at soccer games, Camp Fire events and all family celebrations. He was very supportive in everything that Kayren was involved in, including dinners and programs at the Fort Worth Woman's Club and delivering products for her Mary Kay business. Jack was preceded in death by his mother and father, Maude and Leon Harter. Survivors: His loving wife of 45 years, Kayren; brother, Don Harter and wife, Ann, of Springfield, Mass.; daughter, Rachel Harter of Sunset; son, Kevin Harter of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Jill Teagarden and her husband, Mike, of Richardson; grandchildren, Grace, Max and Sam; and many other loving family members and friends.

The service was such a beautiful celebration of Jack. I was moved by the stories shared, the people that came together and the military touches in the ceremony. I am deeply sorry for your loss, Kayren; for Jill, Kevin and Rachel - who lost their daddy; and for Grace and the boys who lost their Papa. Jack will be missed by all of us, for sure.

My memories of Jack go back to college but especially to my seeing him afterward in England in the castle he commandeered as a quartermaster for himself and his buddies. What a wonderful sense of humor he had! My adolescences to you Kayren and to the rest of the family. Robert J. Alpern, M.D.

I did not have the honor and privilege to know you Jack, but I feel like I do though your daughter Jill. She is one of the most wonderful work colleagues that I've had the privilege to work with and I know that a lot of her great accomplishments, kindness and smarts are a result of your nurturing, guidance and love. There has always been a sparkle in Jill's eyes when she speaks of you and her family and I know that will continue.
