James Davis Obituary

James Davis
March 22, 1941 - August 9, 2022
Bedford, Texas - James Packard Davis, 81, of Hurst Texas, died peacefully the morning of August 9, 2022.
Jim, or 'PD' as he was known to friends, was born on March 22, 1941 to Dwain Donley Davis & Helen Mae Packard in Sacramento California. Jim quit school and may or may not have fudged his age to join the Air Force.
While stationed at the former Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth Texas, Jim worked nights at a drive-in theater. It's there, at the snack stand, that he met Sandra Joan Powell - a beautiful woman he would dote on for the next 61 years. Married on February 24, 1961, Jim and Sandy went on to have two children, James Blake Davis, and Erica Christine Green.
Jim went to college on the GI Bill while operating as an Air Traffic Controller at the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Euless, Texas. He first earned a degree in Aviation Management, and then a Masters in Computer Science, which became his true calling. He was hired by IBM as a Senior Systems Analyst in World Wide Air Traffic Control, working on the new 'computer-age' air traffic control system.
Jim threw himself into his work and hobbies. A Ham Radio operator from an early age, Jim was still on air till early March 2022. He loved working with the Hurst Amateur Radio Club and RACES. His call signs included AB5XS and WA5QOC. In the early 80s, he started a software company from his home in Hurst, selling one of the first remote access programs for personal computers. He was a private pilot who enjoyed flying his single-engine Mooney airplane.
Jim was known for his (extremely) quick-wit, generous nature, and an intense passion for learning and experiencing new things.
Jim was preceded in death by his older brother Ronald Dwain Davis, his father Dwain, and his Mother, Helen.
He is survived by his wife Sandra, his brother Thomas Franklin and sister Elaine Stewart, his two children and son-in-law, Michael Dale Green, nephews Johnathan Jacob Jenkins, Jesse William Jenkins and Daniel Davis, nieces Keri L Davis and Veronica Davis, eight grand-children Jarrett Dale Green, Joseph Michael Green, Heather Edith Virginia Hawk, Daniel Ray Green, Rylie Mckenna Green, Davis Alexander Green, Timothy James Davis, Derek Austin Davis, and fourteen great grand-children.

P D Davis was quite a character. I worked with him at Ft Worth ARTCC in the early 70's. He had a standard joke about his cigar. He would be talking to someone and ask them if that was their cigar laying there. They would say no, and he would pick it up and have a few puffs.

My Dad was a great man. I have so many wonderful memories with him. Flying with him, riding behind him on his motorcycle on long rides, fishing & skiing. Getting my Amateur Radio license and now I have his old call sign WA5QOC. A call sign I heard a million times repeated in my youth.
My Dad was also a huge lover of all animals. Right down to letting my pet hamster burrow in his beard when I was little. He loved his kids & grandkids and would do anything he could to help them. Our whole family will miss him so much. He was our rock.

I love you Daddy, Chrissy

To Sandy and the extended family. Michelle and I are very sorry for your loss. Always enjoyed talking with Jim and admired his intelligence. We will miss him at the family gatherings. I know the kids lost a terrific grandpa.
