James Hales Obituary

James F. Hales, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Saturday in Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, the Yellowhouse Lodge and Dr. Jay Horton officiating. Visitation: noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Mr. Hales was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Dec. 19, 1924, to William J. and Mabel Perry Hales. He attended the University of Texas, Southern Methodist University and Vanderbilt University. He graduated from the Texas College of Mines, followed by attending law school at the University of Texas. Mr. Hales was a homebuilding contractor and land developer in El Paso and had been a member of the El Paso and Texas National Homebuilders associations and the Texas Association of Real Estate Brokers. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, a 50-year member of Lodge 130 AM & FM in El Paso and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a longtime member of Trinity First United Methodist Church in El Paso.

Survivors: Daughters, Sarah Smith of Austin and Mary James "Jamie" Phillips of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Rayner and Rachel Smith of Austin and Grant Phillips of Fort Worth; sister, Sarah Wiseheart; and two nieces in Fort Worth, Susan Howland and Jill Joslin.
