James Mendenhall Obituary

James Thomas Mendenhall went home to be with our Lord Jesus on Sunday, April 27th, 2025, at the age of 83. He passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer.

Jim was born on April 10th, 1942, in Hurley, Missouri to Elburn and Jessie (Raper) Mendenhall. He was the second youngest of four. Jim was a member of the Hurley Tigers class of 1960, where he played basketball. He attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics from 1962 to 1964, where he earned his aviation A&P license. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1964. During his deployment, he bravely fought in the Vietnam war as a crew chief and door gunner on Huey helicopters and served both the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Air Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim joined Bell Helicopter in 1967, where he worked for 38 years until his retirement in 2005.

Jim married his sweetheart, Sue Moore, in July of 1972. They started a family in 1976 with the birth of their only child, Jeff. They remained happily married and celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in July 2024.

Jim loved serving his fellow man as an active member in the Masonic lodge. He was highly involved in Masonry, having served his home lodge for 38 years. He was initiated on 4/9/87, passed on 7/7/87, and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on 8/20/87. He serves as Worshipful Master of Smithfield Lodge from 1991 1992, was awarded the Golden Trowel in 2007, and served as DDGM of District 64-A in 2008.

Jim received his 32° on Oct 15, 1988 and was always an active member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Valley. He was also an active member of the Valley Gun club and assisted in every aspect of the valley activity.

The 32 KCCH was conferred on him on September 21, 2013 and he was coronated a 33° Scottish Rite Mason on September 9, 2023.

He was generous with his time, freely spending every moment he could to help others. His kindness touched the lives of all those around him.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Sue, his siblings: Shelby Ullom (Paul), Lynn Mendenhall (Pat), Bill Mendenhall (Claudia), his son, Jeff and daughter-in-law, Brandi, grandson James, and numerous nieces and nephews.

I met Jim long ago through the Helicopter industry. Jim was a Rep for Bell Helicopter. But Jim became a very good friend. We've stayed in touch over the years and I'll miss him. My condolences to Jim's family and friends. A donation will be sent to St. Judes

Jim was Bell Tech Rep when I met him in 1990 as young rotorcraft mechanic and he continued as area Bell rep and great mentor well past his retirement in 2005. Jim was always extremely helpful, and supportive. Learned a lot from Jim including how to use a RADS to track & balance. He inspired me so much remember him standing across from me at my toolbox one day when I said to myself " I want his job as Bell Tech Rep when he retires". Which I've know been since 2007. Jim had a huge impact on me and my career. Often referred to him as "Gentlemen Jim" and will always remember him that way. My condolences to family and friends.

While I did not know Mr. Mendenhall, I want to extend my sincere condolences to the family. I honor his service to our country. From a disabled, Army helicopter crew chief, and a 1968 Republic of Vietnam combat veteran.
