James Murphree Obituary

James Willis Murphree
December 6, 1934 - December 7, 2020
Dallas, Texas - Our brother and uncle, the Rev. James Willis Murphree, died on December 7, 2020, at 86 years of age. Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at a small service for the interment of his ashes at the gravesite in the Graves-Gentry Cemetery in Hamilton, Texas.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Jim attended Arlington Heights High School, and received his B.A. degree from Yale University. From 1957 to 1961 he was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, exiting as a Captain from the Reserves in 1970.
A graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, Jim was ordained into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Delaware in 1972. His ministries included parish work in Delaware, New York, and Texas. In addition to parish work, Jim served as a chaplain in hospitals, retirement homes and psychiatric hospitals.
Jim was a man of extraordinary courage and sensitivity. Highly trained in both theology and psychology, Jim worked with the severely mentally ill and exercised unusual compassion, care and insight in that work. He was also deeply committed to reducing inequality and suffering wherever he found it.
Nature in all its brilliance was a powerful source of peace and joy to Jim. He had a profound love and knowledge of trees, especially species native to Texas, and of horses, in particular wild mustangs. He particularly treasured the beauty and untouched ecology of Big Bend National Park in South West Texas.
Jim is survived by his sisters, Patricia Murphree Honea of Fort Worth, Texas and Dr. Mary Charlie Murphree of New York City; and by his nephews, Dr. Bert N. Honea of Loveland, Colorado, and Willis Murphree Honea of Dallas, Texas, and by his nieces, Mary Honea McClung of San Antonio, Texas and Elizabeth Honea Buckles of Lawrenceville, N.J.
Gifts in remembrance of our brother and uncle can be made to The Southern Poverty Law Center, or The American Wild Horse Campaign, or the Environmental Defense Fund.
