James Murphy Obituary

James Nolan Murphy III FORT WORTH--James Nolan Murphy III, beloved physician, died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, at the age of 79. Jay's life was defined by his commitment to serving the needs of others. As a young boy, his desire was to become a pediatrician in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. Following his graduations from Arlington Heights High School in 1958, Southern Methodist University in 1962, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1966, and the completion of his pediatric residency at Children's Medical Center of Dallas in 1969, Jay began his medical practice in Fort Worth. He was a practicing pediatrician for 46 years, during which time he cared for thousands of patients. Dr. Murphy was best known for his gentle bedside manner and his genuine love and concern for his patients and their families. Rarely did Jay go anywhere in the city of Fort Worth without running into one of his patients, to whom he always recognized and greeted by name. Seeing and visiting with his patients outside of the office was always one of his greatest pleasures. In addition to his vocation, Jay pursued numerous other opportunities to serve others. Most notably, he was the medical director of Camp Sweeney, the largest summer camp in the world for children with diabetes. He held that role for 25 years. Jay was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 11 so he had a natural desire to use his personal experience, along with his medical training, to help improve the lives of others living with the disease. Jay's influence at Camp Sweeney spanned over 60 years in his roles as a camper, counselor, medical student, medical director, and member of the board of directors. Jay was grateful for the opportunity to serve patients and those in his community, but he was most grateful for his 52 years of marriage to Ann. Jay and Ann married in 1968. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed traveling, gardening, the visual and performing arts, collecting art and antiques, and spending time with their two children and four grandsons. Jay and Ann also taught Sunday school together at University Christian Church, where Jay was a lifelong member. Most of Jay's activities were outwardly focused, but he did enjoy his personal hobbies and interests. Among those interests was his love for gardening. After his retirement from pediatrics at the age of 75, Jay obtained his Master Gardener certification. He spent many hours working in his yard, growing orchids, and managing the greenhouse in his backyard. SURVIVORS: Jay is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Elizabeth Jones and her husband, Mark; his son, Frasher Murphy and his wife, Adrienne; and grandsons, Will Jones, Sam Jones, Ben Murphy, and Nate Murphy. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: A private, graveside service will be held in Greenwood Memorial Park. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Camp Sweeney, www.campsweeney.org/donate/ or P.O. Box 918, Gainesville, TX 76241. Dr Murphy was the pediatrician to all 4 of my kids many years ago. (they are 17,18,24 & 27 yrs old now) and to this day we still talk about how much we all loved him! He would let all the kids go to his office and pick out a special prize from his stash of trinkets he kept in his desk drawer and always wrote a hand written note on our blood work result cards telling us how much he enjoyed my family. I was just searching for him today because my oldest daughter had a baby and came across that he had passed away 1 yr ago today. I just wanted to let his family and everyone else know how special he was to us and what great memories my kids have of him.

Jay was always one of my favorite cousins. He had a moral awareness and a kind heart. I am sorry that I did not stay in touch. I only heard about this from Dudley Hodgkins III, Love to all . Sherrie

I was blessed to have Dr Murphy as my pediatrician from birth until I finally had to switch to a “grown up” doctor. My biggest blessing was that he was my children’s pediatrician from birth as well.

There has been no doctor on earth to come close to Dr. Murphy’s compassion, grace and expertise. He was generous with his time and knowledge. He explained things in laymen’s terms and often got his dry-erase marker out to illustrate the issue as well.

Like so many others, he was there when our son was diagnosed with T1D. He broke the news to me. He gently explained what the next few days would be like in the hospital and he called to check on us during our stay. Over the years he faced many things with us and was a great advisor on who to seek expert opinions from when he felt a specialized opinion was needed.

I cried the day I received his retirement letter in the mail. There will never be a replacement for Dr. Murphy in the world and in our hearts. His grace, his faith, his humility and his compassion always made us feel like we were in the presence of a saint. My deepest condolences to all of his family.

Dr James Nolan Murphy III was one of the kindest, caring and devoted physicians I have ever had the privilege to know and work with over many years. He was one of motivative factors inspiring me to volunteer at Camp Sweeney as a younger doctor. Later when I became a pediatric endocrinologist at Cook Children's Medical Center, he sent many of his diabetic patients to me for specialty care. He was a fine physician who deeply cared about his patients as a whole person, and as a type 1 diabetic himself, he was especially insightful and empathetic with his diabetic patients.

He was a real Blessing to his community and a wonderful human being. While the World mourns the passing of his physical presence, the lasting impact of his service to generations remains, and Heaven celebrates the homecoming of another good and faithful servant. ... Now rest Off-Call in Eternal Peace & Joy

I could always look out on the dance floor from my bandstand and spot the biggest smile in the crowd: Jay Murphy. And I am sure it was because he had the lovely Ann on his arm.

I am so sorry to read of his passing. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Murphy was a wonderful, caring person. My daughters, both of whom are now grown with young families of their own, adored him and he remained their pediatrician until they went to college!! They would have stayed with him forever if they could! We are so sorry for your loss - the world will be a sadder place without him in it. He was one of the good guys!

I am sorry to hear this. My dad was a pharmaceutical salesman, so he knew every doctor in town, and he liked Dr. Jay NOLAN Murphy the best. My brother and I went to him age 0-18. The Nolan (which I learned just now) is very important because there is more than one Dr. Jay Murphy in Fort Worth and if your school calls the other one and asks for your immunization records and they say they don't have them, you get kicked out of school.

Jay will be deeply missed by so many! Our heartfelt condolences to all the family! He touched so many lives, and ours was especially blessed by his friendship. I know there is a party in heaven going on now with my father and Jay....what dear lifelong friends who passed away weeks from each other. My mother and the Freys all join me in sharing our love and prayers for Ann, Elizabeth, Frasher and all the family! Countless children and adults are remembering their days as Jay's patient too. Thankful the 4 DeMotts and 2 Frey children all were also able to be under his care for a time. May the Lord bless you all and bring you comfort.

I am so sorry to hear of Doctor Murphy's passing. He was a wonderful customer and friend over the years that I had my tailor shop in Fort Worth. He was a really good and kind man. I missed having him as a customer when I retired and I know he will be missed by all who knew him now that he's gone. My condolences to Mrs. Murphy and the family. May he rest in peace.
