James Vick Obituary

James Edwin Vick, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2008, in Glen Rose.
Service: 3 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Chapel. Interment: Acton Cemetery. Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Martin's Funeral Home in Granbury.
Memorials: May be made to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church or a charity of choice.
James was born in Vivian, La., on Feb. 6, 1928, to Mary and Oscar Vick. He went to work at an early age, sometimes working three jobs while attending school. After moving to Texas as a teenager, he attended Arlington Heights High, TCU and NTAC. He married his high school sweetheart, Lanita Shipe. They lived in Mississippi and Louisiana, where their children, James E. Vick Jr., Carolyn Sue, Robert Kyle and John Stephen were born. He went to work for the original Halliburton company in Mississippi, working several locations in every phase of the company, serving as superintendent of the Laurel, Miss., district for a number of years. He then transferred to the Canadian company in Calgary and eventually became president of Halliburton Ltd. in Canada. After several years of running the Canadian operation, he moved to the home office in Duncan, Okla. He worked in international out of Duncan until retirement at which time he was vice president of international operations.
After retirement and a move to Granbury, he spent several years farming. He loved the outdoors and had a sense of wonder and reverence for all nature.
He also enjoyed golf, painting, fishing, hunting, camping, music and "coaching" the Cowboys and Rangers.
He was a man of simple faith who said that every day of his life "was better than the day before" and he was always grateful for his loving family, friends and many blessings.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and was a 32nd-degree Mason and Shriner.

Survivors: Wife, Lanita Vick; children, James Vick Jr. and wife, Pat, of Granbury, Carolyn Zimmerman and husband, James, of Miles City, Mont., Robert Vick and wife, Cindy, of Caldwell and John Vick of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, James Vick III and Stacy of Wilkesboro, N.C., K.C. Vick and Nancy of Yonkers, N.Y., Eric and fiancee, Kate, Chrissy and Mark Zimmerman of Portland, Ore., and Kayla, Kassidy and Katelynn Vick of Caldwell; great-grandchild, Anakin Vick; brother-in-law, Don Shipe and wife, Jo Anna; cousin, Johnie Merle Hamm; stepbrother and stepsister, Louie Vick and Linda McDow; and nieces, Gwen, Annalee and Rebecca (John).

I am Mr. Vick's grandson and attended the funeral in Texas on Monday. The service was graveside on a beautiful day with crisp leaves, cool breeze, and gentle sunlight. I relayed the thoughts and kindness expressed in this guestbook to my father, James Jr.
