John Sweeny Obituary

John Duane Sweeny
March 9, 1951 - January 18, 2022
Grapevine, Texas - John D. Sweeny was born March 9th, 1951 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Growing up near train tracks started his lifelong love of trains. He attended the University of Illinois where he received his bachelor's degree in Finance. He then attended Loyola University where he received his MBA.
John met Janet Hertel in 1971, on a train, in IL and married in 1973. In their early days, they enjoyed spending time with their friends and family.
In Chicago, John took a job with American Airlines. This moved them from Palatine to Torrance, CA to Omaha, NE then finally to Bedford, Texas where they settled in. Janet and John adopted their only daughter Jennifer, in 1986. Loving but strict, he supported her in all her hobbies. They bonded over Beanie Babies, even traveling to Canada for a special bear.
Some of his best friendships developed because of his health hurdles. From working out after his bypass surgery to his friends from DaVita, John was always able to make lasting friendships wherever he was.
He was an avid model railroader, a member of NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) and the Colorado Railroad Museum. John and Janet enjoyed being members of Whites Chapel. When he retired, him and Janet traveled to train shows all over the country. John would watch train videos on his phone. You could always hear the whistle blowing. He is now on the heavenly train home.
John is preceded in death by his mother Arleen Sweeny; niece Natalie Joy Hertel-Voisine, father and mother in-law, Marilyn and Arthur Hertel.
He is survived by his devoted wife Jan Sweeny, Daughter Jennifer Sweeny and husband David Ayers; grandchildren Ryan, Matthew, Charity, and Nolan; sisters, Jodi Riley and her husband, Bill Riley, Theresa Elliot and her husband Bob Elliot; special Sister –in-law Barbara Hertel, plus many nephews and nieces.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to JDRF. (Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Research.)

Great man! He´ll be greatly missed as a mentor/father figure, throughout all his medical procedures he was ALWAYS able to keep that witty sense of humor!
