Kenneth Cox Obituary

Kenneth M. Cox, 72, a medical doctor, left this earthly life to enjoy eternal life with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, in Fort Worth. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Thursday at Faith Presbyterian Church, 301 Bailey Ranch Road, Aledo. Memorials: May be made in Ken's honor to All Saints' Episcopal School of Fort Worth, www.asesftw.org/giveonline or 9700 Saints Circle, Fort Worth, Texas 76108. Ken was born Feb. 8, 1939, in Melissa, the only child of Melvin and Juanita Cox. He grew up along the Gulf Coast in Lake Jackson, where as a teenager in the Brazosport High School marching band, a certain brunette drum major named Sue caught his eye. Sue Muckelroy would become his life partner. Together, they went to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where he fell in love with his other lifelong passion - the TCU Horned Frogs. After graduation, Ken headed to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he and Sue had their first child, Allison. After a brief internship in Dayton, Ohio, where Amy was born, they came back to Texas for Ken's residency in radiology at M.D. Anderson and St. Joseph Hospital. They rounded out the Cox clan then with Angie and Mike. After a couple of years in private practice in Lufkin, Ken and his family moved to Conroe, where he and Sue raised their family and lived for nearly 20 years. A natural leader, Ken was among a handful of physicians who helped expand Conroe Medical Center to care for the growing community during the 1980s. Along with his longtime partner, Dr. Benjamin Hughes, he established and grew a successful radiology practice, and he always held a special place in his heart for cancer patients who relied on him for radiological oncology treatment. He retired in 2000 and he and Sue moved to Fort Worth. For as much physical care as he gave to thousands of people during his career, it was the spiritual care, guidance and leadership that he gave to his church, to his friends and mostly to his family that truly defined his life. Along with Sue and the rest of the Cox family, he was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Conroe. He grew spiritually through his many years as a student and then as a discussion leader in Bible Study Fellowship. Simply put, Ken was a rock. He was the person that his friends could rely on. He was the dad who his children knew would always be there for them. Survivors: Most of all, he was a faithful and loving husband of 51 years to his "girlfriend," Sue. His life - more pointedly, how he lived his life - will be reflected in the lives of his children, Allison, Amy, Angie and Mike, as well as his grandchildren, Bragen, Bronte, Cameron, Bryce, Kellen, Austin, Jacob, Kendall, Tate and Allie.

Sue, I was so sorry to hear of Ken's passing. You two were some of my favorite people at BHS. He was such a gentle man and gentleman then, so the beautiful words in his obituary only mirror the person he was as a teenager. My prayers are with you and your family. Anita McCain Blankenship
