Lila Rapp Obituary

Lila Rapp, beloved wife of Thomas E. Rapp, M.D., died peacefully at a local hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, following a stroke. Service: Services celebrating her life glorifying Jesus will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3740 Birchman Ave. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please give to Kanakuk Ministries, Inc., 1353 Lake Shore Drive, Branson, Mo. 65616; Christ Chapel Bible Church; or Young Life Fort Worth, 817-732-2250, 5801 Curzon Ave., #105 Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Lila was born on Sept. 15, 1939, in Griffin, Ga., to Dr. H.J. and Emory Copeland. Growing up in Griffin, the Copelands were faithful members of the First Baptist Church. Lila graduated from Baylor University in 1961, where she met her husband, Tommy. After graduation, they married in Griffin and moved to Galveston where Tommy attended medical school and Lila taught elementary School. After brief stints in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Griffin and Galveston, they eventually made Fort Worth their home in 1971. Lila loved Christ Chapel and had a passion for children. She was a loving, caring mother as well as a loving, devoted wife to her husband of nearly 50 years. She was lovingly known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren. Throughout her life, Lila continued to love and care for children as a Sunday School teacher and supporter of Kanakuk and Young Life Ministries. She was also very active in Bible Study Fellowship, where she was a leader for almost 20 years. Lila lived a life characterized by a single-minded pursuit of her Savior. No matter what her journey, whether on a short trip or for her journey through life, Lila rested in the promise of Isaiah 52:12, knowing that her Lord would go before her and be her rear guard. She was known as a prayer warrior, spending countless hours each day reading Scripture and fervently praying for her family, friends, and others in need. Her selflessness was her defining quality, constantly praying for and serving others in the name of Christ. Not only was she a mighty intercessor for her loved ones, but she was also unusually thoughtful. For example, she was diligent at remembering birthdays, blessing most with a quick serenade over the phone with her sweet southern drawl. Unashamed and boisterous in her rendition of "Happy Birthday," she brought a smile to everyone's faces as others would gather around to hear a voice bathed in the zealous and unconditional love that flowed from her most cherished relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And, if one knew Lila but didn't know her greatest love, that person would certainly hear the Good News from her and be relentlessly prayed for by Lila and her friends. Survivors: Lila Copeland Rapp is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Tommy; by their children and their spouses, Lauri and Mark Moore of Fort Worth, Todd and Bronwyn Rapp of Branson, Mo., and David and Nikki Rapp of Fort Worth; by her brother and his wife, Henry and Lolly Copeland of Montreat, N.C.; grandchildren include, Elizabeth and Sarah Moore, Hunter, Connor, Carter, Colton and Collins Rapp, and Dalton and Emory Rapp.

Just wanted you to know, Tom, that my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. I appreciated so much the help that you and Lila gave to Sherry and my children while I was in Vietnam.
May God bless you and give you consolation.

Ever since I learned of Lila's death, memories from college days have flooded in. In particular, I recall the wonderful Thanksgiving spent in Griffin, Georgia, with Lila and her family when Lila invited me to join them. The Copelands were kind and generous people--just like Lila. Other memories center around the Athenian Club at Baylor and the fun and laughs we shared. I will always see Lila that way--during the college years. When I think of Lila, I always think of Tommy too and their love for each other. Those years were a time of wonderful friendships that were special in every way.

Lila was my roommate a few years at Baylor. I went after and begged her to be, because how could you find a nicer person to room with. I can still visualize her rushing or sliding into the room, long hair flopping on her shoulder, happy and interested in everything one was doing. She had great psychological insight into people and was lovingly non judgmental. Her loss brings the brevity of life home in heartfelt ways.I am deeply sad to lose her so soon. Love to Tommy who was always on her mind and I would enjoy seeing photos of the children and grandchildren. Linda Clayton Hicks

Tommy, I was shocked to find out about Lila. I can still see you and Lila as you walked the Baylor campus. She was a fun suite-mate of mine at Baylor too. She was, indeed, a beautiful person. Sherron Sipes Shuffield

Lila was the most genuinely sweet lady in the whole world. This is not an exaggeration as any one who knew her would agree whole heartedly with me. I am so pleased to have spent some sweet time with her this summer. I will miss her and look forward to seeing her again with my precious savior.

God gave me a special gift last Saturday. I saw Lila for the first time in years. Her eyes lit up when she saw me and she immediately knew who I was and started asking about my children. She was still full of love and joy, even though her body was frail. Thank you, Lord for the gift of seeing Lila before you took her home. My prayers are with Laurie, Mark and all of Lila's precious family and loved ones that will miss her so dearly. I am so thankful to have been touched by her godly example.

Dear Family,
Schuyler and I always asked Lila to talk to us because of her wonderful Southern accent...we enjoyed her tremendously! She was always ready to listen to our family stories or look at pictures.

May you hear the sound of the Lord singing over you...
May you feel His great, unconditional love surrounding you and His strength supporting you in your time of need...
May He fill all your hollow places with His lavish, sufficient comfort...

Sending our love,
Kaymarie, Schuyler and Clif

I have so many fond memories of Lila and her family. One of my favorite memories is of a trip she and Verna Pedigo made to California to visit me. We had such a good time in San Francisco, Monterey and Carmel. They were wonderful house guests, no dish was left unwashed! I also fondly remember her support of Young Life, her wisdom, generosity and prayers. I am praying for all of the family. May God comfort you in your loss.

I met Lila when my family moved to Griffin during my Sophomore year of High School. Over time, Lila and other classmates at Griffin High accepted me as one of them. Lila's parents gave me a beautiful lamp for graduation that I treasured. I loved my 3 years of high school at Griffin and even though my parents moved away after I graduated, I still consider Griffin my home town. Lila was an exemplary Southern Belle -- charming, warm, thoughtful and gracious. She was one of the most popular girls in our class and a friend to everyone. She was a very special person. My heart and my prayers go out to her husband, brother, and grandchildren

Lila has been one of my best friend for 66 years. I first met her in first grade when we were 6 years old. E[ght of us little first graders shared a very unique and special friendship that has lasted through the years....fond memories of Brownies, Girl Scouts, church activities, many sleep overs and summer house parties at the beach. Even though we did not get to see her as often, we managed to stay in touch. I last saw Lila in April 2010 when we all met in Atlanta. What a fun time we had talking about old times and especially sharing stories of our grandchildren. I will miss her so much. What a warm and wonderful person she was and an inspiration to us all. My love and prayers go out to Tommy, Lauri and Mark,Todd and Bronwyn, David and Nikki, H.J. and Lolly and all her beautiful grandchildren. Cynthia Lewis..Tallahassee, Florida

Mrs. Rapp will truly be missed. Even though I never met her mom has worked for Dr. Rapp for many years. I know of many times she prayed for our family and the hurt we were going through. My mom would always tell me how she would pick things up for my daughter for no reason. Its amazing that not even knowing this wonderful woman that she touched mine and my families hearts. So thank you for being an amazing and loving woman.

Lila sat next to me in most all my classes thru GHS. She was always there with a smile to cheer...and a quiet reminder for what was due the following day as we left. Since I had the privilege of spending my almost entire life with one of Lila's closest friends (another member of the famous "Group") I was blessed to follow Lila thru her life and see her or talk to her from time to time. Lila is an angel of God that He has now called home to help him. My sympathies and thoughts are with you, Tommy, and the entire family. Tommy Lewis

Tommy and family: Lila and I grew up together. Our birthdays are only 9 days apart. She was so loved by all of her classmates at GHS. Her sweet spirit will long be remembered by those of us who were so close to her. She has left a wonderful legacy for her children and grandchildren. We will all miss her but I'm sure Heaven is rejoicing over her arrival. Our prayers are with you all during this very sad time. Marilyn Gore Parkerson
