Marian Millican Obituary

Marian McKeever Millican, 60, a prominent interior designer and educator, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at home in Fort Worth.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Fort Worth, with Dr. Tim Bruster officiating.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Streams & Valleys Inc., Box 101373, Fort Worth, Texas 76185, or a charity of choice.
Marian was born Dec. 22, 1949, in Irwin, Pa. She was a graduate of Penn State, B.S., with highest honors, and Michigan State, M.A., summa cum laude. Marian was an instructor of interior design at Virginia Commonwealth University before moving to Fort Worth in 1977 to become associate professor at Texas Christian University. In 1988, Marian opened her design studio Millican & Co. in downtown Fort Worth, a firm responsible for numerous restaurants, retail, offices and corporate headquarters in Fort Worth as well as projects throughout the U.S. While continuing to practice, Marian returned to full-time teaching in 1996. As associate professor and interior design program director in the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Arlington, Marian led the program to the highest accreditation level.
As an author and designer who was widely published, Marian supported interior design education, leading design workshops, speaking at conferences and conducting research. She authored the 1988 national licensure exam used for interior designers. As one of the first registered interior designers in Texas, Marian worked tirelessly for collaborations in the practice and education of architecture and interior design. Recognized as an honorary member of the Texas Society of Architects, she also received the ASID Chapter Medalist Award. One of Marian's greatest joys was to see the accomplishments and successes of her students, many of whom are now leaders in the interior design community in the U.S.
Marian was a founding board member of Urban Strategies and of the Contemporary Art Center, board member of Downtown Fort Worth Inc. and Streams and Valleys Inc. She was a volunteer for the Cliburn Competition, a docent for the hearing-impaired at the Kimbell Art Museum, a member of First United Methodist Church, the Junior League and Colonial Country Club. She worked tirelessly on numerous committees and endeavors to further art, design, education and the environment in Fort Worth.
In 1986, she married architect Kirk Millican, and in 1992, she gave birth to their long-awaited-for child, Carter. Marian loved being a mother with Carter as her greatest joy. Kirk, Carter and Marian loved to travel as a family, attending design conferences and spending special times in Red River, Taos and Pipe Lake. She and Kirk spent many hours exploring architecture and design projects -- enjoying the uniqueness of each one.
Marian was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 and bravely fought the disease and treatments while practicing design, teaching, volunteering and being a loving wife, mother and friend. As everyone knows, Marian wanted to be defined by her accomplishments and love of life, not by cancer.
Marian would like to acknowledge the creativity and diligence of Dr. Angel Negron and the loving spirit of his staff, giving Marian 11 wonderful years with her family and friends.
Marian's friends will always consider her as a part of their family and will remember and appreciate her laughter, her uplifting perspectives on life through her own whimsical approach -- along with good champagne. Marian's true zest for life was a testament in itself and one that should be emulated by all.
Survivors: Husband of 23 years, Kirk; son, Carter; sister, Linda Fowler of Columbia, S.C.; her dog and constant companion, Hailey; sweet Emily; and her many friends.

I just learned about Marian as I logged on to the ASID Memorial page and am greatly saddened. While I didn't see Marian often, she was periodically in my thoughts. I remember her zest for life and her smile whenever we met. Although this message is very late in coming, my prayers go to Kirk and their son.

As an architect you always gave me the insight on life and color and forever you made my days brigther. Everyone that met you at UTA will miss you but will always remember you. I met Marian while working at UT-Arlington. The strength she exhibited made an impression on me and she quickly became one of my heros. I watched her give so much of herself to her family, friends, and students - all the while dealing with the cancer that was ravaging her body. Perhaps it was her love for others and her wonderful sense of humor that gave the cancer its biggest challenge and allowed her to live longer than others in the same situation would have lived.

My days would brighten when Marian walked into the office. She always had funny stories to tell. I enjoyed being around her and the lunches we shared. She talked a lot about her husband and son and I am so grateful she had them because they brought so much joy to her life. I absolutely adored Marian Millican.

My wife and I had the privilege of being Kirk, Marian and Carter's next door neighbors for four years. We were awed by her zest for life and even though she endured many difficult times during her illness, she never let it affect her love of life which she enjoyed sharing with her friends and family. We'll always remember with fond memories sipping her famous homemade margaritas on our front porch (and laughing a lot too). We missed her from the moment we drove out of our driveway for the last time but we knew we could always call her and let her cheer us up. Now she's gone and we'll miss her even more. Our love to Kirk and Carter.

Marian left a great legacy. I overheard one of her students say "Oh, here comes my favorite professor." This was several years after her diagnosis and she was still teaching while going through yet another round of chemo. She was a very interesting lady and fun to be around. I feel blessed to have known her. And Carter! What joy he brought to her. She never stopped talking about him. I'm so sorry for your loss and very sad that I didn't know until now. She was the inspiration for starting our evening breast cancer support group - Bosom Buddies After Dark. We will all miss her.

As a contract furniture rep, I knew Marian and Kirk for many many years, and have many wonderful memories, of going on commercial furniture trips to Canada with Marian, and spending time in their home and her studio, catching up on work and personal, and just enjoying LIFE! We have our memories of her great sense of humor, her focus, and a trail of design projects reflecting her artistic talents. I feel honored to have had her as a friend and business client. Prayers and Love to Kirk and Carter.

I will always remember Marian and our chats at University Litttle League field. We would sit on the benches and discuss her son, Carter, and my son, Carter, and their team. Marian always said she was so grateful that she was given extra time to be with her husband and her son. We will miss you, Marian.

Marian was such a memorable teacher, i think that the word whimsical really describes her personality best. She had a wonderfully positive way of looking at everything. She taught the first interior design course i took, and really got me thinking about how design affects people. My favorite class she taught was the color class. She had such passion for the use of color. She would always talk about her husband and son in class, you could tell how proud of them she was. She will always be a part of me as a designer. She will truly be missed.
