Born Feb. 23, 1904, in Austin, Mrs. Odom was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Francis Bacon of Austin, the sister of the late Gerald Haralson Bacon and the widow of Arve H. Odom, whom she married Sept. 1, 1926, in Austin. He preceded her in death Jan. 26, 1960. Mrs. Odom was a 1925 graduate of the University of Texas with a B.S. in home economics and in 1940 received her M.A. degree in early childhood development from Texas Woman's University. A beloved teacher and friend to her students, she taught in Orange public schools, the Masonic Home in Fort Worth and in Denton public schools. After her retirement in 1963, she helped organize the Day School at Denton First United Methodist Church where she was director and taught the 4-year-olds' classes until she was 80. Blessed with good health and a joy for living and travel, she was always active in church, civic and square dance groups. She enjoyed dancing, handcrafts, ceramics, swimming and bridge. Until her health declined at 99, she volunteered at the Denton Senior Citizens Center and in the "Miller Store" at Good Samaritan Village Health Center. Mrs. Odom was proud to have received her award for over 2,000 hours and 25 years of volunteer work at the Denton State School after her retirement. Mrs. Odom was a member of Omicron Nu, honorary home economics sorority, and was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of First United Methodist Church of Denton.
The family would like to give special thanks for the 10 years of wonderful help and the gentle, kind care shown this special lady by the Good Samaritan Village residents, staff, employees, hospice nurse Kirsten Kaae, as well as Dr. G.E. Adami, Dr. G.A. Aillon, Dr. Glen Genovese and the staff of Denton Regional Medical Center.
